But good days. The nest is looking a bit bare but not yet empty. I've got the biggest, Scout, and smallest, Remington, camping out for a few extra days. Fortunately neither have shown much interest in the headgear of the other and leaving things well enough alone. Ear care was started on each this morning. They did well and they're tolerating their meds well. Remy as I suspected, an expert pill taker already. Scout is scheduled for pickup tomorrow afternoon and from there I'll work Remy into some aspect of daily living around here until he's cleared to go. Unfortunately it's turned cold again so not much outdoor time for either of them until things warm up a little.

All in all things went very smooth factoring in my need to juggle my first experience of overlapping litters. Timing was good. The littles just now beginning to open their eyes.
I've got a few more photos to add to the pup pages of my finished product. From here on out it's all you. Serve your pups well and they'll serve you well as adults.

I think each of you have noticed and joined the litter specific FB page I set up for the group. I look forward to updates -to watching your pups grow and thrive in their new environments. Historically the pages serve well to provide moral support and sometimes ideas regarding what works well as you experience challenges in pup rearing. I myself have learned things from posts and comments given on pages that have been up and running for a while. There will be challenges going forward. Hopefully not many. But it's good to know when working through them you're not alone. -All pups often presenting the same challenges at roughly the same time. Gives you a sense of things being normal. So please don't be afraid to post the bad, along with the good. And photos.... lots and lots of photos! You know how much I love them :-)

I wish each of you and my babes only the best. And I'm here. Will always be here for questions or concerns in the days and years ahead.

I'll close with a few new friendly faces. Nix with Sandra and Terry. And Otis with Justin and his daughter. A great group of people. People hand selected to be caretakers of the future. Once again, I think I've done well. Only one more photo to add which I failed to obtain when they were here to meet their pup. Remington with Sandy and Tom. Sorry I missed a photo of the first meeting.

The sun was already going down by the time I got everybody unloaded -therefore the photos of our post-op puppies aren't any of my best. Guess I'll be getting up early so I can get an outdoor shot or two of each in their headgear before they leave me. Before most leave me anyway.

Unfortunately Remington still has some residual pneumonia. Better. But not completely clear. He got his crop with the rest of the group but no health certificate. Yet! We'll return Monday for a follow up after he's completed his current course of antibiotics. Hopefully we get the green light then. Hated to make that disappointing phone call leaving the office but both Sandy and I knew a delay was a possibility. Again Sandy, my apologies. But I'll take good care of my little buddy till we can officially make him yours. I guess since I told someone else a good first day project would be to teach the sit command.... What's that saying? What's good for the goose is good for the gander??? I guess I'll be teaching your boy to sit. Day one... which starts tomorrow. Maybe catch the flying chicken too. That's a fun one.

As for the rest of you, your pups are doing great and will be ready to go, on schedule, tomorrow.

I've kept them somewhat off limits so not completely destroyed. But one will go home with each of you. The scent they pick up from the shavings and their litter-mates is known to ease the pups transition. So... we do it. Thanks again Melanie for the toys. Spared me a shopping trip. And to those of you who gifted "me" something special- Thank You!
I am heading to Wildwood as soon as I hit post. Anxious to re-unite with my babies!

They've had some rinsing in the past but never full baths. Regarding baths of the future, and rain... I'd like to remind everyone of the importance of keeping your pups ears' dry while in headgear. Whether it be the cup they'll be wearing when they come home -or future tape and posts. For rainy days, many people have used basic plastic grocery bags. Slip the bag over the head and tie the handles under the chin. Not particularly attractive but serves the purpose. Sandwich baggies secured with a piece of tape looped under the bridge between posts work pretty well when you get to that stage... about 10-12 days from now.
As far as ear care goes, each of you will receive an antibiotic and some medicated ointment to apply twice daily. An item that isn't included but strongly recommended is vitamin E oil. It can be picked up in oil form or capsule. Capsules can easily be pierced with a pin and the contents squeezed and applied along the ear margins. The vitamin E oil really does seem to speed healing and allows for easy removal of crusts that form on the incisions as they heal. Hopefully everyone will have a chance to pick some up within the next few days. It was down to a wire but I've got everybody's page updated for the week. A bit larger project than the 3-4 photo entry I typically add to their pages each week. In favor of a big slideshow mid-week, I added a slide show for each individual. I enjoyed photos with mom. Not all moms create a scene to make a photo session possible. I wish I would have thought of the idea while Majestic was having litters. I think she would've been fun to photograph with pups. Skye was my first and as far as first experience's go, it was a great one! It came to be when I discovered one of her pups had managed to escape the dog run I'd placed them in for safekeeping. I spotted them through the window and thought... "what the heck how did that happen"... Turns out Drita was a good escape artist. But what I found when I went out to correct the situation was too cute for words. Mom and pup just tooling around the property enjoying each others company. Naturally being who I am I grabbed the camera. And the rest is history. I had a photo shoot with Skye and each of her pups thinking I'd begun a new tradition for my kennel.

But my next litter, Getka's didn't go as planned. Getka had pretty much left her pups behind once the weaning process was, for the most part, complete. For her it was complete. No more tenderness from her for her pups. I quickly learned when I brought the first pup out that she'd just as soon bowl them over as to hang out with them. She was back to her running, playing self... looking to me to throw her a frisbee All memory of motherhood left in the dust she kicked up as she ran past her pups.

Remedy was good. Similar to Skye. Enjoyed her pups. She used her paws and legs to correct them where as Skye used her mouth. Skye would grab and hold by the skull apparently applying whatever pressure was necessary with each pup. Remedy left that as a last resort option. Both moms were easier on the girls than they were on their boys.

I learn quite a bit by reviewing photos... kind of amazing really. There's much that goes unnoticed when watching the pups in the flesh.... especially in a group. In this litter, I guess I was most enlightened by what I saw in photos from Remedy and Scout. Historically Scout has kind of marched to the beat of his own drummer. If ever I had to retrieve a pup who didn't follow with the group, or collect one that went astray, it was my red collared boy. I'd find him enjoying life on his own terms without the companionship of his brothers and sisters needed. I noticed too, in photos prior to the 7th week, he always kind of had his nose in the air as he looked at me. I read it as somewhat of a defiant posture. Even if I didn't see him as a defiant pup. But with mom he was anything but defiant. And the photos of them together tell the story. It appeared she tried to instigate him a time or two. But he didn't take the bait. As a result she tried a different tactic to draw him in... she played along side him rolling back and forth in the grass. His position was one of avoidance. And I was amazed when I looked at his photos and saw only one facial expression from him. Despite various surroundings. He had only one face. A poker face, hence his nickname.

I'll try and get a few shots of each in their shriners hats before they leave me but for the rest of the week I'm just going to enjoy playing with the group and each individual personality.

As far as photos go, I've got enough from earlier in the week to keep me busy evenings throughout the remainder of the week. I managed to get Remington and Nix's pages updated with a slideshow and hope to complete the others tonight. Still cursing the rapid fire shutter setting on the camera. Decide it was too difficult to choose between a bunch of similar photos I liked so ended up posting them all. In succession they kind of tell a story. I learned some things myself in reviewing them. The girls got off pretty easy with mom... as did Remington and Scout. I posted the "stink eye" slide show of Titan a couple days ago. He and Otis both spend quite a bit of time in the dirt during their outing with mom... Scout approached her with more reserve. Maybe he took note of her stink eye and came to the conclusion avoidance was the best course of action. For the most part what got them in trouble were continued attempts to nurse. And sometimes what got them in trouble wasn't all that evident. Some took corrections to heart and came back at her with tongues wagging. Some, the boys, came at her with a touch of feistiness. Despite their battles though there were tender moments for each.

In other news, I received a great report today on Remington during his followup appointment. His pneumonia has cleared 75 percent and his weight up from 3.5 pounds to 8. We've got another round of antibiotics to get through and an end goal of 100% improvement -no lingering pneumonia. He'll report for surgery on the 8th with the others but given he's still being treated he'll be reassessed that day to decide the best course of action.... proceed with his crop or delay it a week or two. DOG PARKS!!!

I don't personally go to dog parks and I don't recommend them. When mentioned as an avenue for exercise I explain my viewpoint and reasons. I've posted articles and opinion on my GMBD Facebook page and have discussed the issue with many prospective pup owners. But as with anything else I'm sure some have slipped through the cracks. So, since I've likely still got everyones attention, I've got a story to share on the subject that I just became aware of today. This isn't an isolated incident. It's the third, that I'm aware of, that involved a pup of my breeding.

When I originally heard of dog parks as they started opening throughout the states, I thought "oh what a great idea" But as far as ideas go, I think they are likely one of the worst. Parks sound nice and can be. For people. But not generally for dogs. Dogs aren't people. If you want to take your dog to the park take it, on leash to a people park.... not a dog park. The problem with dogs parks -things may look calm and friendly when you enter the gate but you have no idea or control over who may open the gate and come in five minutes after you arrive. And it's unfortunate, people will knowingly take problem dogs to dog parks.

With permission from the owner of a pup from my last litter, now just shy of eight months old, I share her story and photos of her boy. Hopefully to spare others from making the same mistake.

I'm glad he survived. It doesn't always end so well. An eight month old pup really isn't equip mentally or physically for a fight with an adult dog.

"A not so great start to the new year. Yesterday Klaus was attacked by a pitbull at the park. He was minding his own business and just sniffing other dogs. The pit came across the park and attacked him. It would not let go and kept going after him. The owner's tried blaming it on the fact they are both intact. If your dog doesn't like other males then don't take him to social places. It's that easy. The owner's didn't say much or offer to help with the bills. I was in such a panic and didn't even think to call the police. Not like I could stick around and wait for them. We spent 5 hours at the emergency clinic. And this morning I dropped him off to be monitored and for additional treatment. He is home now and resting. It was very traumatizing and I still cry when I think about it."
