Extras From The Week...

Sometimes I have great difficulty choosing what I think are the best pics for the pup pages.... Some photos adorable but the feet or top of head aren't captured. Sometimes blurry etc etc etc.

I'm still fighting time and yesterday, having only completed four pups, I wasn't sure I was going to get the pages updated this week.  But.... I know how disappointing that would be for each of you. And historically I've never missed a weekly photo shoot. So onward through the storm we went. Sometimes literally. For the most part we've had great weather and have continued to receive some much needed but sporadic rain. Some of the pups were lucky to enjoy clear skies. Some traipsed through mud puddles and drizzles during their photo shoots.

Seems I keep getting monkey wrenches thrown my direction at a time when time is limited. When the media took hold of the whole packing problem and forecast a major meat shortage coming up, I decided to order some live poultry. I should know better by now than to listen to MSM... After following for a while and things surrounding the topic calmed, I called to cancel my poultry order of chicks and turkeys. Rural king refunded my money on the turkeys and said they had contacted shipper of chicks and that I should be receiving an update soon. Still haven't ... And....  the turkeys arrived yesterday. Since I'd cancelled and hadn't received notice of their pending arrival, I had nothing set up for them. So that task was unexpectedly placed on the agenda yesterday.

Also mid-week I received a call from one of the local Doberman rescues who informed me they had a dog from one of my earliest breedings coming in asking what, if anything, I would like to do. I informed her I was shocked as I have a return policy in place. And this particular dog is prime example of why that policy is in place. There is no reason for any of my pups to ever find their way to rescue or god forbid the pound. I've received a handful back over the years and I'm happy to report all are placed in loving caring homes that have turned out to be nothing short of fabulous. Most often, if they come back, it happens when the dogs are under a year old and people realize they don't have adequate time. Or the knowledge and fortitude to train .. despite the fact that I try and guard against that when I'm taking reservations. Hence the lengthy phone calls and questions each of you are familiar with. Fortunately I can also say, the dogs that have come back to me have been loved and cared for and for the most part had good manners for age. With the exception of one who had been allowed to completely run amuck for 7 months.

It's not so bad to get a youngster back... they generally aren't as set in their ways and seem to be pretty adjustable to new surroundings. But I feel bad for the older ones who are uprooted from what they know and are accustomed to. I try not to pass judgement though as obviously I'm aware of monkey wrenches. The girl coming back is seven and product of a divorce. Plans are in place to pick her up Monday. I expect she'll be a sweet girl based on photos I've received along the course of her life. Even if the photos have been few and have all but dropped off over the past few years. I think she got a great start in life and that helps tremendously.

Looking forward to the weekend and to meeting a few of you. I always enjoy the selection process!!!

Wow.  What a Great Day! Yesterday...

We had kind of a spur of the moment, six week/memorial day celebration.

I'm not really a rain fan... unless it's sporadic. Lived in Seattle for years and definitely had my fill. But... I don't like drought either. I'm a lover of moderation. Things were getting pretty crispy around here but finally we were fortunate to get a break from an extended dry spell.

And I must say, we had a fabulous day... all things considered.  With the rain, we saw a major decrease in bugs (yellow flies) zero hawks in the sky and some very welcomed coolish weather. Under a light drizzle it was a perfect morning to get a few more outdoor chores done... kennel care mainly. And then simply spend time with the pups. Pretty much a day off.

Had actually planned to start on the pups individual photos for the week but ended up switching gears, opting to just allow them to enjoy themselves and a new, to them, weather experience.

I've been feeding the pups for a couple weeks now and for a week or so have been helping Getka with the weaning process via separation. To a degree unsuccessfully. Seems she's a bit slow to dry up...still plenty of milk. And as you can see from photos still willing to nurse and the pups still eager to partake. Getka has improved 10 fold from her first litter as far as motherly duties go. I remember thinking early to mid stream through her first litter -if she didn't improve for the second, it would be her last. But she did improve. And now she's acing mom hood.  I was a bit reluctant to turn her loose with her pups after a week apart. But I've got to tell you, I was supper impressed with her reaction. Historically, she has been more inclined to blow right past them or bowl them over... more interested in a throw of a ball than them. But yesterday I couldn't even entice her to run for a ball. Unheard of for Getka... pups or no pups. Yesterday was all about her youngin's. She showed them her kinder gentler side with just a bit of rambunctiousness thrown in. Playing. Practice makes perfect i guess. Happy to say. And it's pretty evident fun was had by all. Including me as I simply sat back and watched. Our day started with lunch on the porch which at times consists of straight kibble. At least one of three meals a day. Still lightly blending and hydrating the other two. From there we moved on to play in the yard with some hand me down toys =before finally introducing Getka. Turned out to be a great day for photography too. And the makings of a rather long slide show. Maybe too long... but it's hard for me to choose favorites. The pups wrapped up their day with a brief siesta on and around the porch followed by a lengthy and restful sleep once returned to their indoor space. Exhausted. Quiet!!!

Today I'll carry on with my original plans for yesterday. Individual photos of the pups for their pages. Wish me luck. I hope the pups... and weather cooperate.

Hope everyone had a nice Memorial day weekend.

Where oh where does the time go???

Early up and down late and still behind. I did finally get the grounds mowed. Was overjoyed to find my pit is once again passable with the Hustler. Historically I've used it for burning yard debris, but overnight a few years back, it became Lake Irma and has been in various stages of that since.  Hopefully it will stay in fire pit condition for use once our Covid-19 burn ban is lifted. Irritating that ban!!! First they lock us up at home. Then they make it difficult to do much of anything around the home. Alachua County's Emergency Response went into effect at the end of March. With it, the rural collection centers were deemed essential but remained open only for household items. "No yard debris - No large items". I tried to take some fiberglass screen there in the early days which I'd removed from my Gazebo and tightly balled up for deposit and I got a head shake and a finger wagging. "Only household items" I was told. "Things that could attract rodents". I explained my frustration with the whole thing. Placed on lockdown and given the perfect opportunity to "tend to and clean up our homesteads but hands tied with nowhere to actually dispose of said things. After considering my point, I was allowed to deposit by smallish ball of screen but haven't dared to take anything of the sort since -unless it could be discreetly hidden within a bag. I also cheated a bit with the burn ban, as did my neighbor. Actually he cheated a lot with a fire nearly daily. Smoke from my fire a week or so back however alerted the neighbor on the other side. He trapesed through the woods to get a glimpse of what was causing the smoke and informed me of the burn ban. Told him "I thought it had been lifted'... By the time he arrived he acknowledged the fire was nearly out and that I had my hose at the ready...  He didn't want to see me get a $5000 fine... but actually I think he was worried about the woods behind his place. First time I'd met him...  I explained same frustration that I'd explained to the lady at the rural collection center and he nodded in agreement. Thought the burn ban had to do with dry conditions. First time I'd met him and we ended up with a nice long chat. One positive that came from this ordeal we find ourselves in.

The yellow flies are still wreaking havoc here but my shipment of Picaridin has finally arrived. It's the only thing I've found that somewhat keeps them at bay. It's fortunate the dogs seem unphased by the buggers because they swarm them too.

But enough on the trials of life and the trials of "Rona"...

After my long day of mowing Thursday I decided to introduce the pups to an evening outing on the porch and to the fine art of griddling chicken. I quickly learned though, they've yet to appreciate the wonderful aroma of chicken as it sizzles away.  They nearly immediately went back to their preferred job of bush trimming. Personally I think they need some practice but I give them credit for effort. And team work. What one decides to do, they all do. Whether it's eating kibble, drinking, trimming or napping. Great group effort among them.
Their follow me has become very good whether I'm out in the yard with them or bringing them back in the house from the back deck. They quickly come in from the out and jump right into their indoor accommodations with minimal encouragement and lots of rubs and praise once they get there. And they're keeping their sleep cot relatively clean. Yay for that.

....  A few photos of our evening outing. They were out well before the chicken was done. Not a nose was lifted. Hard work, that bush trimming. I assume their appreciation for the smells of a cook will grow in time.

Yesterday was a big day of shopping but even with that the pups were included. In a way. I purchased their toys, one of which will be their take home gift from me, as they begin their new journey's in life. That time rapidly approaching!

A Bit About Nails... And Dobermans

5/20/2020

Picture
A bit of a 'pet' peeve of mine. I personally could do better. Nails tend to get a bit long here, especially when dogs are pregnant and nursing. But letting them get overgrown proves not only a disservice to us but most importantly to our pets. The longer the nail gets, the longer the quick gets and the longer (and harder) it is to get them back under control. It's said Dobermans should have a paw similar to a cat. I don't understand that completely because to me they share little, if any, similarities. But I agree with one thing... You shouldn't be able to hear Doberman nails clicking on the floor as they move about it. Not only is it unsightly, it's a glimpse into lack of proper care/attention. But again most importantly, long nails aren't good for structure and therefore their ability to move with ease.

I've collected some example photos from the internet of great manicures and a photo of one none of us want our dogs display. Nail care shouldn't be a big issue. Like anything with a dog, the earlier you get them accustomed to a thing, the easier that thing will be going forward. Whether it be nail care, boats or water in general.  As long as done with kindness and proper acclimation they're pretty accepting when young. Not always the case as they get older. And we're not talking older as in "older". We're talking about right out the chute. These pups have had their nails trimmed a few times already. Partially for the benefit of Getka and to increase her willingness to nurse. But going forward each will be introduced to a dremel.  Toward the end of their stay with me and when their nails get a little harder. Just an introduction really, but enough to get them used to the idea of dremeling. Dremel's are hands down my preferred tool for nail care. And experience tells me, if you're in the market for purchasing one, I'd bypass the pet model and go for the basic Home Depot/Lowes model. The dog design is likely fine for smaller dogs but Dobes grow to have large, hard and strong nails. Always helps to have the appropriate tool for the job. But again, bottom line is consistency. A weekly schedule. Quick, easy and painless for all.

Better Late Than Never...

Decided yesterday mid to late day I seriously needed to take a brush to Fancy, which I did. Then made the mistake of turning on the TV and closing my eyes. Needless to say, never got back to the pups pages but Fancy is looking much better. Ready for her bath.

Today, refreshed and re-energized... weights and pup pages have been updated and my end of the paperwork complete.

A while back, someone mentioned in comment, I think Deb, that Brown looked like a Rottie pup... Funny when looking at the photos of this week, I'm thinking Blue most resembles a Rot. Stout little boy! But I assure you, we've had zero exposure to Rottweilers..  100% Doberman here with exception of one severely outnumbered Afghan Hound.  :-)

A Work In Progress...

All but one of the pups have had their photo shoot, breakfast and lunch. Now just need to upload photos, weigh, and worm.... Then dinner and a sprucing of their habitat. Actually... maybe not in that order. Updating of individual pup pages may occur last in the whole scheme of things. Stay tuned. Hope to get all pups pages updated by days end. They're doing great... don't care for losing track of me while I take their pictures. Already developing track and find which should equate to a great recall down the road.

Forgot to mention in my last post, I've scheduled some pup visits for the purpose of selection. Annette's visit is planned for the 30th to choose her boy... followed by Joe who who will be here the following day. That really just leaves Andre to visit and claim one of the two remaining boys as his own. Outside that, selections based on color and or sex have essentially been left to fate. Fastest and most uncomplicated selection process I've ever experienced!!! I would appreciate a visit from each of you though regardless of whether or not it involves choice. I like to have a chance to meet everyone and I think an initial meet and greet makes the transition  easier on the pups when it's time for them to leave their first and much loved home. Feel free to give a call to schedule. I'm nearly always available and can work around your schedules.

Tools Of The Trade...
Picture
I'm overjoyed to report the pups have settled into their new enclosure well and caught on to the purpose of each section. Nearly immediately. I think only one accident on the cot so far and that happened within the first hour or so. Since then they've been sleeping on the cot... or under it, using the shavings to do their business and enjoying free range of fresh water.

Along with their move they were introduced to their first bath and did phenomenal. Not as much as a whimper from any of them. Not one. :-)  The transition is always a bit bittersweet for me. I miss being able to look over upon them as I watch TV in the evening. But on the other hand it opens up my room to share with the other residents here. I miss that quality time with each dog when I have pups. The only thing I have somewhat of an issue with... Missing that time with the others.

Outings.... Dining On The Deck

Sometimes I photograph... sometimes not.  Sometimes they're on the deck... sometimes given free range to explore. The weather has been great for getting them out... And their confidence is building. Environmentally, we're still fighting the yellow flies! Some days are definitely worse than others and while the dastardly things torment me to no end, they don't seem to bother the pups much. Or my adults for that matter. They land on them and I know they bite because it's just what they do. And one day I noticed a bead of blood on Hot's nose... But the dogs seem unphased. Fortunately.
The pups seem to like the Hustler... actually they like things they can get under or near. Safety mechanism maybe. Which isn't a bad thing except when it comes to photos. Helps them to avoid becoming prey to large birds. Smart little buggers.

Working On Pup Pages!!!

5/13/2020

So as you can see in most recent photos, the past few days have been eventful. Monday marked the pups four week birthday and we celebrated in a big way. They gobbled up their first mash like pro's. I guess they were ready. Also took to water without much hesitation. Getka continues to feed but her desire to do so is obviously waning. Would in fact call it reluctance. I think the pups are trying out their new found teeth, not only on each other but I think they've caught her by surprise with them as well. They're beginning to hurt each other... and yes Getka too. Getka's response is to hightail it. The pups at times quarrel. In fact I think this group of pups is the most determined to stand their ground than any I've had so far. Maybe due to the overwhelming number of males in the pack. Regardless the reason, a few of them have been noted to get seriously pissed off at times. Always short lived but they get their point across if they feel crossed. Blue seems to be aiming to take title of "firecracker". Small but mighty as they say. He'll happily tackle the largest pups and holds his own when they come back at him. He any Copper seem to have developed a bit of a bond. Copper far more laid back than Blue though.

Their outdoor adventure was a hit too. First day out -I allowed them to stay within a small outdoor enclosure in order to soak up the sights and sounds of nature with Getka and myself standing watch. They tested the constraints of their new habitat while I prepared their first meal. I've started them on mash of the IAMS variety. Not the absolute best as far as ratings go, but not bad, and a kibble I've historically had good luck with. I feed my adults and older pups Victor but the Victor line up seems a bit too rich for young pups resulting in loose stools. So for now, and until they leave me, they will eat IAMS Large Breed Puppy.

I plan to move them out of my bedroom today into the neighboring mudroom. They'll be housed in a corral similar to the one you see outside. But indoors their habitat will be sectioned of into sleeping quarters with the addition of a cot, a drinking station and a potty station of shavings. Some litters have figured out the purpose of each section right off the bat... others took a bit of trial and error. And one I don't think ever really got it as they used the cot bed as their poop pedestal and slept in shavings. Hoping I don't have a repeat of that.

As the title suggests, I'm working on the individual pup pages. Had hoped to get them up and published yesterday but ended up having to take a "me" day which consisted of a road trip to St Pete for dental.Actually had it scheduled prior to the pups' arrival but like many other things I had planned, my original appointment was cancelled. Green had his first photo shoot Monday... the others when I got home yesterday. The light so late in the day wasn't the best for photos but I really wanted to get them done. Most still seemed fairly timid with their new found freedom. Not ready yet to explore. That like everything else though, changes pretty quickly. Week four I get what I get... my sole focus is in staying close and on reassuring them and helping them to feel comfortable with all the newness. They did well.
I'll get the pages published by days end... and tomorrow I have to buckle down and get some much needed indoor cleaning done.
