Finally Home And Settled!!!!

Although I always know they're in good and capable hands it's always really really fabulous to have ears behind me! Like any surgery... human or pet. Got home pretty late... around 5:30 I think. A bit of an afterthought, I decided I better stop and get Doc a little something since it's likely the last time I'll see her. And the staff too -although I may see them again for hip X-rays in the future. Apparently the Vet taking over the practice has been mentored by one of the finest in the art of hip/elbow films based to OFA requirements and I'm assured she has the technique down pat. A bit of an art in and of itself I guess. Gotta get the angles right. Wish she would have been open to being mentored to the art of the perfect crop! But it is what it is. I'll miss my trips to Wildwood, truth be told! It's been a good ride! Great crops, pleasant staff and always praise for my pups.

Today was no exception. I always get rave reviews from the office staff there on the demeanor of my babes. Today was the ultimate! "You're pups are always so good... just love them! Sweet and easy to work with". And get this...  "Even better than Doc's".  And it's obvious they like them... and me! Can't ask for more than that. I think this litter may actually be one of my sweetest. All about love and kisses. Calm and surprisingly little biting the whole time in my care. I love them... and I have no doubt each of you will too! I think you already do actually. My ultimate goal! Ha!!! I got ya!

When people give you trouble with the look of a tape and post, or even if you're caught with staples in their ears, tell them "I saw them the day of crop. Even then, they were no worse for the wear!!! Rearing to go within a couple hours of coming out from under anesthesia"! But don't fight. Everyone has their opinions. For the most part, it's those that have no experience that see and judge. You state a simple fact and be done with it and feel good about your gorgeous, to standard Doberman pup. Period! Your pups were done by the best of the best!!!

No worse for the wear! Going about their business as usual. Would have given them toys but considering they are in fact fresh post-op I think the less rough housing the better.

Going to add a short slide show from photos taken this evening of individuals. Will take me a few minutes. Hope to get some good ones of each for their pages before the opportunity is gone from me... See you tomorrow!

Farm Doggin' It!

We're down to the final four! Athena, Buddy, Greta and Shine. So, so thankful for some nice weather! Today we did some work. Work for me and for the pups a bit of a game. But a learning opportunity as well. The job at hand... pick up sticks in prep for mowing, The pups job was first and foremost to stay close, which was easy for them. Secondarily they had to stay away from my feet and the front of the wheel barrow (or be run over) and they excelled. My job was to collect the sticks and get them in the barrow before they decided the sticks and moss were objects to be played with. Seems they have an affinity for the moss...  But we made it a fun outing and I got the task at hand accomplished. While collecting, I asked for some bravery too... collecting near the big dogs, secured in kennels, who offered some barks... Again, the pups did well and followed me to dump our barrow on the burn pile. A couple, not sure which, stopped to say hi to dad en route.

Next after a quick break on the porch for me, and in the bushes for them, we pulled laundry from the line. The only pup to follow for that job was Greta. The others busy with toys in the bushes. Greta watched and played solo and finally settled laying by the basket. At one point I walked back to the bushes to see if I could draw the attention of the other pups and was rewarded by two following me back to the line... the hold out was Buddy who seemed content to stay in the bush!  Wasn't concerned, he had shelter and none of these pups will stray. I went about finishing what was left to do on the line and within a few minutes, Buddy too joined me and the rest of the pack to finish up the laundry.

Next up, some porch time as darkness was falling. Nothing like dining in the dark... Well ok, we did have the luxury of a porch light. But darkness was in fact falling all around. I incorporated some new toys into the outing and I'm not sure which was most appreciated. The toys or dinner. In the end, all but a few kibble had been consumed and all toys dirtied and used. Fun and dinner was had. For me too. Earlier in the day I fired up the Blackstone and grilled some bacon. While the pups ate, I ate too. A BLT

After... I was basically prepared to call it a night. But, since I still had some energy and a thought, I decided to introduce Shine to the rest of the pack. Most of them anyway. I first gave her some time with mom which went well even if some hesitation was shown on Shine's part. Next on the list of introductions was Majestic. Jess did really well with her but did the paws down, butt up pouncing thing that put the pup off a bit. But they worked it out. Jess has loads of experience with pups!!!  Next I let Skye out. She acknowledged Shine but immediately went about her business of canvasing the property. The two never really had any interaction to speak of. Then came Remedy who was all about checking out the new addition. She sniffed and pawed a bit, but in the end she was all about mothering Shine. She licked her belly as Shine went belly up and groomed her ears as if to say, "hey chill... we're one and the same. I mean no harm".  A work in progress...........!

A great day was had by all. Including me. It was nice not to have to be anywhere or do anything according to any type of schedule. We just went with the flow. Even got the lawn mowed... at least the area around the house. Maybe the rest tomorrow.

Thanks to those of you have updated via the FB litter page. And to the rest of you, thanks for your patience. I assure you, your pups are getting better and sweeter by the day!

We Have Cone Heads!!!

Pups are doing great... got home safe and sound from our crops as all of you know either via the FB page or a private conversation. Pups were a bit famished and exceptionally thirsty! Fed x two now and watered of course and were put to bed. Kind of looking forward to going to bed myself tonight with the ability to peer over at them from the vantage point of my own bed. Such sweet pups. They received praise from the Vet Techs at the office for being quiet and easy to handle both while getting prepped and then waiting their turn for crop and for remaining quiet after. Always good to hear... they say they like handling my pups. Wonder sometimes if they say that to all breeders... but I don't really think so. They sound and seem sincere in conversation... Happy pups.
I took a bunch of photos when I unloaded the foursome here at home while they stretched their legs after a long day of nap and confinement. But most of you will likely have your pups in your arms before the photos ever make the blog. I'll post the favorite of what I've seen on my roll at this point as a example of the breed specific beautification they each received today! The rest will come later... And I'll see you tomorrow! I'm off to administer meds and call it a night!

Nail Care....

The Perfect Pedicure!
Picture
Based on the shape of the paw, Doberman nails should be kept short. They are solid feet with upright toes. If you can hear your dogs nails clicking on the floor the nails are absolutely too long. The photo above is one I found on the web and I'll post a few other pics of dogs in various stances to give you an idea of what to aim for. Your pups will come to you with essentially no nail at all. They're clipped while under anesthesia and blood stop applied. The rational for doing this is to prevent nails from getting hung up in sutures and staples while your pups ears are healing. Since done under anesthesia there's obviously no pain involved and they demonstrate no signs of associated discomfort once awake. The goal is to keep up with them. Keep them short and you'll never have to worry about cutting into the quick. I personally prefer Dremels for nail care, but what ever you plan to use be sure to handle your pups paws a lot. Also, best to get them used to the sound and feel of a Dremel, if you plan to use one, before you really actually "use" it. Familiarize them to the sound of it and feel of the vibration. Seems people that put their dogs on a weekly nail schedule... "every Friday night we do nail care", fare the best. Quick, painless and not a big ordeal. Something to keep in mind starting out.

Getting Down To The Wire!

9/4/2019

And I've had a great couple days with the pups. Lots of outdoor time with all. Temps with the system to our east have been glorious! Cloudy, but rain minimal, and light, and some nice breezes. What more could a Floridian ask for. Especially in September!!!

I finished the slideshow I started yesterday this afternoon and then it was on to prepping for cropping tomorrow. I've set up a second corral. One for the haves (crops) and one for the have nots. The pups on return from crop are typically raring to go. Rambunctious. But still don't appreciate getting their cups knocked about. Seems best to me to separate the litter at this stage. Those with understanding of the procedure from those with none.

Tomorrow morning I'll get up early and give each a quick pre-op bath and from there we'll get on the road. Based on everyone's schedules and what I've been told, I've got Amelia, Luna, Nox and Reason slotted for tomorrow. The others will be done on the 9th. Will let you know when we're home...

What a Great Day! Feeling So Relieved!!!

9/3/2019

We got lucky!!! Dorian could have been a serious nightmare but... we got lucky! With thoughts of what could have been behind me I had a great day with the pups! Each of my own got a great play and encouraged exercise in... and then it was on to the babes. Breakfast had and slept off! I once again took them out in pairs to explore the property. Greta with Reason, Luna with Buddy, Nox with Athena and finally, though I think it was too late for any decent pictures, Shine and Amelia enjoyed and outing together.

I think the earliest groups got the best photos... time as well as my camera's ability to deal with low light conditions and movement all three were factors in that. But the best part of it all...  we had fun! If tomorrow calls for a redo of any pups I hope to fit it in... My girl and Amelia come instantly to mind! Early on, I discovered I was having a little trouble keeping the pups out of the bushes today. They'd grab a toy and off they'd go. So we explored the property. As long as moving and not near the porch, they're like little magnets.
Greta and Reason
Buddy and Luna!
The pink mouse saga! After watching Luna today, I'm so glad I found another mouse! She and buddy were out for quite a while before I remembered it. They had fun with each other, the bushes and briefly the rope toy. When I remembered the mouse, I tossed it about 2 feet away from them while they were busy messing around in the bushes. The mouse went unnoticed for quite a while. Luna noticed it first. I think she spotted it actually but walked up slowly, gave it a sniff and a nosing and from there it was game on!!! It was hers and she was having it no other way! Buddy was intrigued by her new found interest and made several attempts to steal but to no avail! They raced around and through the bushes, around and under the Jasmine alongside the house and finally she settled under the Camelia as Buddy settled for gnawing on a branch. I knew she loved that thing... didn't realize how deep that love was until today!. She amazed me actually. Great determination on that one. Buddy never got it from her! Not once!

Nope! Ain't Happenin' Buddy!  I Lost One! I'm Not Losing Another!!!
Picture
Athena and Nox...
Wasn't sure Nox would ever join us yesterday... he seemed pretty attached to the porch where as Athena was on my leg from the get go... once engaged though he was all for fun. Immediately stole the toy Athena had been playing with and off to the nearest bush with his treasure he went. Athena following like "what the hell man"?  And from there around the property we went... Didn't think I got much worth saving as photos went at first glance last night, so I took them out for another round today.

We Are Officially Ready!

Hoping the prep done ends up being for not. Best case scenario for sure! But I'd much rather be prepared than not. Was certainly glad I prepared in advance for Irma. Whatever debris was in the yard, pick up. Anything that seemed could become a likely projectile, secured. We all know the drill. Coolers and sources of light are in the house sitting on standby. And water... water everywhere. Reusable containers filled, big totes full in each bathtub, by the kitchen sink and one on the porch. Anything in immediate need of washing...done! Even Fancy. Something I really couldn't delay any longer! It dawned on me yesterday while hosing the little dog run how really horrible it would be to be without running water with a litter of pups...  pretty much regardless of age. A generator really needs to go on the "to get soon" list.

Saturday I returned to the Vet with the final four and we were awarded health certificates for all. Now we wait for cropping. Not sure what's up with this storm. Supposedly now at a standstill. Even so, according to forecast the path to Wildwood should be clear by Thursday. A very appropriate meme I saw the other day definitely describes Dorian... watching a Hurricane is like being stalked by a turtle. But this too shall pass and I remain hopeful none of us will sustain damage. I can't even image living in the Bahamas... the Islands like magnets for Hurricanes. They never seem to get a break.

Pups are doing great. All weighed while getting their exams and most are just shy of 10 pounds. No one looking particularly ribby anymore. But no rotund bellies either. All look fit and healthy. Managed to get weekly photos of everyone Friday and into Saturday and will get to work uploading them now. I know everyone's anxious to see their babes. Missing them.
