Happy Birthday Lexi! May There Be Many Many More!
Well, just as my pup rearing duties with Majestic's litter are coming to a close, I'm ready to call it! Lexi is right on time in showing the beginnings of her baby bump. She acts as though she's feeling great and she's looking awesome! I love this girl to the moon and back! Not sure if it's because she's older and wiser or that she was my first... my one and only for a time when it was time to return to the breed. Maybe it's just simply her! Whatever it is, I could not ask for a better dog than Lex!
Her mate, on the other hand, Serious, well he's pretty special too in a goofy, manly sort of way! Serious is a love bug... not sure there's any other way to describe him. He's playful and sweet and has an incredible temperament! I won't lie, he's exuberant and could benefit from some additional training. For that I can blame none other than myself. He's extremely attentive, eager to please and smart! I'll get him enrolled in another obedience class during my break between litters in January in an attempt to turn that energy into something positive and truly amazing.
I'm excited to see the litter produced by this breeding pair! With one litter behind them, they've got a history of producing some stunning pups! But for now, I hope for a continued easy pregnancy for my girl followed by none other than an uneventful delivery and a pack of healthy pups. And on a more personal level, I'm anxious to get my main sleeping partner back. I've missed her. Stay tuned for the grand re-opening of the whelping room, a.k.a. my bedroom!

But There Weren't ...
And Many Tears Were Shed!
And Many Tears Were Shed!
Getka... My little tank! In attempt to develop her page I have multiple times come to a roadblock. When I've tried to talk to people about Getka and explain why I don't yet have her page up, I find myself unable to venture too deep because it always takes me back to the same place. A place where physically and emotionally I just reach a point of being able to peak the words I'm trying to convey as they become overshadowed by sobs I try my hardest to hold at bay. Still to this day. I'm hoping that words expressed on paper and the thought processes required to put them there will somehow help me deal with my feelings. Getka never fails to bring me back to you Lex! Even today... over two years later
So what can be said about Getka? She's incredible but...
To begin with, I really wasn't in the market for a pup when our paths originally crossed. I had only recently purchased Ritz.
It can surely be said, a very unfortunate set of circumstances brought me to Getka. An omen possibly.
I was on the heels of near devastation following the unexpected loss of my first Dobe, my love, my Lexi who at the time of her passing was 2 weeks shy to deliver a litter which was planned to be her last. She would retire and become queen of the castle.
But we didn't make it. Lex had an off day... nothing specific, just seemed a little blah. She lay content in the chair but was quiet. Wasn't particularly interested in dinner. Things that I attributed to being pregnant and just suffering as I said, "an off day". We went to bed as usual, she always sensed when I was heading that direction and never failed to beat me to the bed. Always, I'd round the corner to find her laying facing the door with her front legs hanging over the edge... waiting. This night was no different. The next morning though, I knew we were in trouble. I woke to small dark spots scattered across the floor of two rooms. She had obviously been pacing. I assumed she was in the process of miscarriage and immediately phoned my Vet. They too I think, based on my description of my dog, assumed and I believe preparing for an emergency c--section upon my arrival. But bloodwork first. I waited, seriously worried about my girl who I could see declining before my eyes as we made our way to the clinic. The initial blood work came back and the first question from the Vet was in regard to her vWd status. She seemed surprised when I reported Lex was clear for vWD. Her response... "Well her blood isn't clotting. It's like water". Obviously, a c-section under those circumstances was not an option. They pushed fluids while we waited for the remainder of her lab work to come back. I was heartbroken when it did. When I spoke next with the Vet, she shook her head and informed me both Lexi's "liver and kidneys were shot". There really was no hope for a positive outcome. We discussed the possibility of Leptospirosis. But living in the country, with dogs who are known to chase prey, it's one of the things I vaccinate for and keep up to date. Regardless, to be sure, she sent blood to an outside lab to differentiate between antibodies due to vaccination vs actual exposure and illness. The lab came back a few days later and verified the antibodies seen in the original specimen were a result of vaccination. That left, per the Vets diagnosis, the ingestion of some form of toxic agent which led to poisoning. I lost Lexi, as I sat stroking her, just a few short hours after arriving at the office. Knowing there was nothing that could be done, watching her decline while I sat with her was utterly heartbreaking! Lexi, was somewhat of a hellion as a pup but had matured into a solid, intelligent, loyal and loving companion. I will forever miss that girl. Hopefully someday I'll get Getka's page up. When I'm ready I guess.

I saw this today and thought of you baby girl. And still the tears flow with thoughts of you. But I think of you often. And while those thoughts continue to bring the pain of loosing you back to the forefront, I'm finally at the place where I can remember the good times you brought to my life... and the funny ones. Just last night I was sharing stories of your puppy shenanigans with Sharon over the phone. The times you turned the water on in the mud room, flooding the place -not once but twice and the time I will likely never forget when you grabbed that 12 pack of Dr Pepper form the shelf and poked holes in the cans after you made sure they were good and shaken. That spray was everywhere... the ceilings, the walls and of course on you. Oh what a mess! You though were promptly forgiven. All your deeds forgiven. I miss you Lex! I loved you!
I've got news of a couple of your babies. Katie Scarlett has gone on to make you proud. She is the light of her parents eyes and Sharon frequently reminds me Katie reminds her of you. Katie's a great girl and companion as you were for me. And smart. She's got your mind. She's also an incredible athlete and shows off her talents regularly. She hit the big time a couple days ago when the Ocala News featured a nice big story about her and her love of dock diving. She's going to Nationals to compete in her now favorite sport, leaving her original debut at Rally Nationals in her wake. I plan to watch and through her I will see a part of you!
You left me with a protector in Remedy.

Lex... I was out taking pics of Skye and your grandkids the other day and when reviewing the photos at days end I came across this one. All I could really see was a minds eye vision of you on what turned out to be your last photo shoot shortly after your 4th birthday. Skye looks so much like you Lex and shares many of your mannerisms. Sometimes when I look at her, I feel you're still with me. Miss you my love! Today and always!!!
