Well, I must say, it's been a long but productive day around here! I finally got Jess and her pups settled into their new abode and things are going well. Majestic is obviously starting the process of weaning her babes though and has been spending much longer periods away from them. Today marks the beginning of supplemental feedings. The pups will eat three times a day 4 days a week and twice on the days I work. At about 5 weeks of age they should be on kibble and will be allowed to free feed while I work. I wrapped up our evening in preparation making sure everybody got a taste of puppy pate'. Some were more eager than others but each of them gave it a try and did well with their first attempts at eating semi solids. Although the corral was just set up today, it already looks a bit of a mess. In hind site I should have snapped some shots of the whole before I fed the little rascals. The blanket you see contains remnants of dinner and the photo of the habitat itself was the last shot taken. I just didn't have the heart to uproot everyone from their slumber to remove it. That said, it may be just as well. It will give them the night to get used to shavings while still having something somewhat similar to what they've grown used to in their previous habitat. Later I will be dividing areas within the corral so they begin to learn that they sleep and eat in one area and do their business in another.
Some of you may have noticed I opened up a few individual "pup pages". I was hoping to get them all up and running but some pups were more cooperative than others. The most photogenic award of the day goes to Red. Green was the most sociable and the most "up". He's well on his way to becoming a lap dog and is already exhibiting a great deal of confidence. All in all your pups and I had a great day. They are just beginning to acknowledge and respond to my presence when I enter their room. Our activities of the day have solidified that. And so it is... the human/dog bonding process begins.
Tomorrow I have plans for an outing with Remedy. We'll be meeting Sharon and her girl KatieScarlett for some socialization at the Ocala Farmers Market followed by an out door lunch at Dog friendly Harry's. Then it's back to work for a few days.... ugh! I'd much rather play/work with pups!
