Wow! What A Busy Week!

I bet you guys thought I'd forgotten about you! Not a chance but unfortunately some things were stacking up that I needed to tend to. Horse stalls... holes dug by the precious pooches that needed to be filled before injuries occurred... Dr's appointments for myself, years overdue... laundry... etc, etc etc. Tonights update as a result is going to be pretty short and to the point. Things, hopefully should be a little more calm next week.
It's getting late and I need to get to bed but I couldn't leave you hanging without assuring you all is well with your pups. They continue to amaze me really. They're growing like crazy and their strength for such young pups is incredible. Orange is already walking fairly well... so well that in the brief time I spent taking photos this evening I was actually able to catch her in the act! The others are trying to get their feet under them to and get a step in now and then but for the most part they're still getting around via the crawl.
Red's eyes are beginning to open and the rest should be seeing the light by Monday.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! The photoshoot is somewhat lacking... or not. I feel like it is simply because so little time was spent behind the lens. More next week though... and the next and next and next!

Weights

As you can see... or not, these little monsters are growing. They also seem incredibly strong for their age. While their preferred method of maneuvering themselves is the crawl, I've seen a few of them take what I would call "some steps"! None have actually gotten up on all fours and walked yet but steps none the less. Their weights were taken and posted early this morning and they're impressive to say the least. Measured on their 6th day of life, Pink more than doubled her birthweight!!! Black and Blue equaled her gain of a whopping one pound one ounce! And with that, Orange gaining only 15 ounces lost her title of heavyweight to Black. Purple equaled the gain of Orange. Red slightly less and Green the least with a gain of only 12 ounces. I'll give our girls with the colors a Christmas a nudge or two this week and watch.

This litter, compared to all others seems the most content. Many times, actually most times, they're scattered around the whelping box with none of them fighting to get the groceries. It's nice to see, even though it probably won't last, as their nutritional requirements will steadily increase. Their tails and dew claws are all healing nicely and all credit to Majestic at this point they're shiny and healthy in appearance. A magnificent litter in the making if I do say so myself!

Pup-Specifics For The Day

Red was all about the grub... throughout our entire photo session. Black spent a great deal of time kissing up to mom... Orange too, but not quite so obviously. Pink seemed somewhat energetic as she scooted herself around the whelping box and Purple was off on her own curled up for the most part, content as can be. The others... well they were just the others. Somewhat non-descript. At least while I had them under the camera lens. Tomorrow Majestic spends her first full day alone with her pups as duty calls for me and I return to the grind. She continues to do a fabulous job and with the box and bedding I designed for the last litter I have no concerns that all will be well when I return home. Even so, I hate to leave them. Actually I just hate to leave period.

Ear Cropping Appointment Is Scheduled!!!

I'm glad I called early. Dr McBride only crops on Tuesdays and Thursdays and my first request.. Tuesday, the day marking the puppies first day of their eighth week, was already booked. Fortunately the following Thursday was still open. In any event it's time to mark your calendars. The pups with the exception of Nick's will be cropped on May 19th. I generally work Fridays-Sunday but will request Friday the 20th off for people to come collect their pups. As always I like to keep them overnight because having had the chance to grow accustomed to their behavior over the course of time allows me to notice any evidence of a problem. Fortunately, there've been no problems in the past and I expect none this time around either.

Following the 24hour watch, the earlier they depart after that, the better. Pups will be pups, cropped or not. Cropping doesn't seem to set them back in the least and the less chance they have to mess with each others hats and sutures the better. The pick up date is not set in stone and if it absolutely doesn't work for some of you other arrangements of course will be made.

Regarding pup selection, I will be calling to try and set up visits when the pups are around 6 weeks old or so. Those visits will need to be set up during the weekdays Monday - Thursday. It sounds a little complicated and it is somewhat complicated to get everyone here in approximately the right order but it always seems to work out.

That's it for now. Majestic is doing a fabulous job of mothering and her pups are responding well! They're already feeling more solid with little bellies that are just beginning to round out. I'll snap a few photos later today and get them posted. Until then, have a great day!

Happy National Puppy Day!!!

Our pups arrived a bit early but just in time to give each of you waiting a concrete reason to celebrate. And the pups too can celebrate as each and every one officially has a home and family to call their own! Myself... well, I'm celebrating as well as I proudly announce yet another return customer. I guess my pups speak for themselves and that is enough to make any breeder proud!!!

We had a good day but something tells me the pups probably would have chosen an alternative way to celebrate their day. One thing about it though, and something their Vet assured them of... their futures will never include broken tails or torn and painful dew claws! Today we completed phase one of what I call breed specific beautification and the pups are well on their way to becoming the gorgeous creatures they're destined to be.

I added a page and posted the weights I took yesterday. The pups will be weighed again in a day or two to assure everyone is staying up to speed and then approximately weekly thereafter. It's normal to see some fluctuation during the course of an eight week period and often the pups that start out the heaviest don't always maintain the title of heavyweight. Sometimes, but not always. I find it interesting to watch the trends but mainly it helps assure me that one, everyone is gaining and in general doing well or two, a particular pup may need a little extra attention. I anticipate less chance or the latter with this litter than any in the past simply because, for a change, there are enough spots for all at the bar.

We Have Pups!

That's the good news! Unfortunately I had to make some calls this afternoon informing people on the wait list that there are too few to go around. Actually, there are just enough... exactly seven. Just not enough of the right sex. Majestic gave birth to 5 girls and 2 boys March 22nd. All pups and mom are healthy and looking great. It's a small litter...my smallest to date... I'm looking forward to a little less work, a little more play and to their first eight weeks! It's easier to properly spoil 7 than it is to spoil 12. :-)

Our first pup was born at 3:30 -a girl. Next up 3 more girls followed by the two boys then out last was our final female. Ray has decided to hold out and continue his search for a male pup. I left message for Millie and had hoped to get the chance to speak with her before this post went up but that didn't happen. My apologies Millie if you are reading this and it's the first you've heard of the news.

For those of you waiting on your pups, I hope you enjoy the attached slide show of their first few hours. This afternoon I applied their colors and obtained for record their birth weights. I'll add a page and post weights sometime tomorrow. Also tomorrow they are scheduled for their first Vet appointment and will return just a smidgeon lighter. Hope everyone is well. It's officially time to start preparing for incoming.

So we wait.... And I'll take an occasional short break from "watching". I suppose it's a good thing actually. I was never fond of the fact that historically Majestic has delivered her pups early. I thought day 59 was simply her number. Maybe my girl's just waiting for the warming trend but I'm not sure she can hold out that long. She's been lounging around for the most part today content to curl up in a chair. But when I noticed a little digging I took her to the whelping room to allow her to start getting things ready. Predictably her nesting instincts are coming alive. Soon...

All Set!

Happy St Patty's day! No Green Beer for me though... I spent the day readying for pups; freshening up the kit, and getting the whelping station aka my bedroom ready! I'm getting excited. Watching and offering my girls emotional and moral support on their big day is a privilege and a day I always look forward to. They're long days.. or nights... or a combination of the two and sometimes I wake to find a surprise in the morning. It seems the last pup in a litter is last for a reason, content to stay put as long as possible. So, I've got to get two days of work under my belt and maybe Majestic will be ready to show us what she's got Sunday. Might be a day or two later... hopefully no earlier. For those of you that guessed, they're all good numbers and quite likely one will be right. I guess I'll throw out a number also; one that hasn't been picked yet. My guess is eleven. I'm hoping for a good mix as far as sex goes but most importantly an easy delivery for Jess and a pack of strong healthy pups! With that said, here's our room all set and ready! A room and whelping box aka pup habitat you'll be seeing a lot of over the course of the next few weeks!
