And once in a while they come back! Boss has returned home... For the life of me, I don't know how they were able to let this guy go. Such a sweet pup... calm and eager to please and quite well trained for a youngster. It's obvious the couple I originally placed him with cared for him and spent considerable time in training. But in the end, they came to the conclusion, they "just couldn't give him what he needed and deserved". It seemed like fate when I got the call. Just the day before I had received a call from a lady who wanted an older pup; one with the ears cropped and tape and post complete. It seemed she wanted a female but since I wasn't sure of that or of how set she would be regarding sex if all other criteria were met, I figured it was worth a try. Maybe things would work out... for her as well as Boss' previous owners. Basically a transfer with me serving as middle man. She was interested, scheduled a visit and liked what she saw. I explained there would be a holding period because unfortunately, just hours prior to his return, Boss was nailed by a neighbor dog and had a pretty nasty puncture wound on his side. I had taken him to the vet and needed to return in 12 days for a check up and suture removal. We also agreed he should be checked for heart worms in addition to the basics included in the required "health certificate". During her visit she walked him around the property in an effort to get a feel for him. I gave her a few pointers and set her to do some healing exercises while her son and I watched. He, her son, expressed some concern about his mom being able to handle such a large dog if he was less than ideal on leash. 1st red flag... While I say Boss is fairly well trained, it seems his healing isn't all that honed. I figured with a little work, it could be. At the end of the day, she was in love with him. But... while I screen pretty heavily when placing pups, I screen more heavily with older pups. If the home that was supposed to be forever when they left me didn't turn out, it's imperative their next home is! Boss is number two for me... I couldn't have shopped for a better home for number one. For Boss, I wanted the same. I decided on a meet and greet at his prospective home. I wanted a chance to see some more interaction. I also felt I owed it to him to at least let him familiarize himself with his future home. He had been bounced around enough in a short period of time. He arrived here late Wednesday night, went to the Vet Thursday, spent the weekend with Sharon and Jared while I worked and then rejoined me Monday. Enough to make any pup dizzy... Boss came through with flying colors but as it turns out, hearts are breaking left and right over this dog. Sharon grew attached to him over the weekend and with tears in her eyes found it hard to say goodbye... Then our visit to St Augustine confirmed Boss probably needs someone with a bit more "big dog savvy"... I wasn't willing to take the chance. And while another has expressed interest, I've grown very attached. Boss has been on his best behavior...his only behavior it seems. I described him to Sharon one day as "an old soul". A nine month old pup with an old soul.... He's one of Lexi's last pups and I see so much of her in him. I don't think I can let him go.... I know I don't want to. If at some point I find the perfect home and feel he would be better off with another, I'll do what's best for him. And another heart, my own, will break. Here's Boss, just being Boss!

Thanks... inside as well. Such a sweet dog! Still retains the "protective" gene though. The best of both.

Your pups are beautiful. My husband and I have 2 dobies now, both elderly. We would like to have a black dobie adult dog when these 2 go to doggie heaven. If someone turns another one back to you, we are interested

Hi Dana... so sorry to hear about your loss. I know all too well the void left with the loss of a dog. I've actually re-homed Boss -he's with my nephew Max living and loving life in Michigan. It's said he even likes the snow! I wrote a rather lengthy post regarding his transition shortly after her left me. It's here on the blog dated 9-6-16 if you're interested in reading it. I hope your heart is healing.
