Well, I guess a good bunch of you are following. Makes me feel kind of bad for posting that sad face. Sorry if it alarmed some of you. I'm happy to report all is well in the land of pups. Thank you much for your comments- sometimes it feels like I'm simply posting to the air. As far as my running blog is concerned that wouldn't bother me terribly because I get enough enjoyment in reviewing it from time to time that doing it for myself is enough. Sort of a journal I guess. A tame one. But where pups are concerned it would bother me to know no one was following their journey toward their new homes. A lot. I'm sure most of you know, each of you were "selected" to be caretakers of these pups. A great deal of thought goes into my decision, based for the most part on our conversations. At some point all of you passed inspection via your ability to honestly and sincerely communicate. When I hear nothing in response to my posts it makes me think (excuse me) "well hell- what happened"?

But now that I know you're following, checking daily to sometimes several times daily I guess I'm in a position of owing you some photos... I got wrapped up in a project today but will snap some tomorrow and get them loaded. I confess I didn't even get their 2 week weights done today. But tomorrow as they say is yet another day. And by not doing it today, it gives you something to look forward to tomorrow. :-)

We do have a new development though as follow up to the post I created a couple days ago. Jordan volunteered to create the litter page and actually already has it up and running. Thank you Jordan!
I'm hoping each of you will join but understand some of you may not be fans of Facebook. It's rare to find someone these days who doesn't hold an account but I'm aware there are those who don't.
Anyway, for those who would like to participate the link below should take you there. Unfortunately, weebly doesn't allow direct links so you will have to copy and paste it into your browser for a search.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1599453606837393/

Once there, either Jordan or myself as administrators will accept your request to join. The page or group is one of "closed" nature to protect the privacy of individuals participating as I'm aware the "openness" of Facebook in general is one reason people site for not using it. Posts in group can only be seen by members and no one outside of group knows of individual member participation. I think the "closed" nature provides the added sense of security many seek when it comes to Facebook posting. I've had several people admit they don't like or use Facebook but like the idea of a litter page and do in fact use and enjoy FB for that purpose alone. Members included in the other groups include the pup owners of course- sometimes husband and wife or significant other, sometimes just one or the other, and in a couple instances pup-grandparents. I think it's reasonable to have close family members who'd like to join do so. We did have a bit of a debacle on one group early on as the pup parent who set it up had no way of knowing who belonged in a "closed" group and who didn't. She unknowingly allowed a few who had no reason to be there in and kicked a couple people who should have been there off. As a result, and for that purpose only, she made me co-administrator and Jordan for the same reason has too.

So...  a little about the pups. They're doing great! Eyes are wide open! They're looking around and moving about with purpose.
They're walking but still only a short distance, maybe 4-5 steps before falling over. Still very wobbly. They're also starting to gnaw on each other a little bit which seems to be their first feeble attempts at play. Their ability to bark is growing too. Last night I heard my first rolling bark. A woof woof...woof! It was a bit muffled sounding.... and absolutely adorable!

Photos and weights tomorrow.... I'll try and get them done early in the day!
Hope you have great nights!

Out Getting Some Fresh Air
My Powerhouse

Man I love this dog! Saggy and all. I absolutely can't wait to see how her pups develop. I'm counting on each and every one of you to send me lots of photos and updates. It's really the only thing, besides pedigree, health etc. that lets me know I'm on track with my breeding program. Soon the chance will be yours. I know the wait seems like forever- I've been there myself. But time is ticking by.

A couple litters back one of the people from the litter decided she'd like to develop a "litter specific" Facebook page. I think we got all on board from the litter and it seems they've really enjoyed it. I wasn't sure how I'd like it since I've got my own Doberman Facebook page but in the end, I found I too really enjoyed it. Like anything else, some people are more active than others in their postings and comments. But I think everyone checks in on
occasion. And as a result I've been able to follow the progress of each pup more closely. A couple others, apparently who still follow my postings here caught wind of the idea and asked if I would help recruit individual owners to their own litter specific pages. I happily obliged so now their are three.
The pages or groups have been not only fun for them but also a source of support and I think motivational for some. While each of these pups will grow up in various elements, they all share many similar characteristics and their owners many of the same joys as well as challenges.  I think the sharing of ideas of things that work have been appreciated and the challenges faced give people a sense their pup is normal whether it comes to the puppy antics of play biting, jumping or bed chewing. Yes, these things will happen and it's best to be prepared. It seems it's nice to know you're not going it alone when things are going less than perfect.

If any of you have an interest in a litter specific page so you can share with each other, let me know. I would prefer not to be administrator of the page but co-administrator is fine- at least until things get up and running.

Puppies doing puppy things...

2/25/2018

The past few days have seen some changes. Eyes are nearly open though you'd basically never know it because most times the pups continue to sleep in a heap. When awake though, they're managing to get up on all fours briefly before succumbing to a fall. They get back up and try again- determined little Dobermans that they are. I'm hearing an occasional bark too and everybody's growing. Pups actively being pups. Irish continues to do well but by no means is he catching up to his litter-mates. They're really beginning to overpower him so I make sure he has some alone time on mom 3-4 times a day. Anxious for the day I can begin feeding them some mash and size and strength becomes a non-issue for him.
All in all everyone's doing well, including my own pack- Majestic and Remedy healing up well from their scuffle.

Just a quick check in...

It's been a few days since my last post so I figured some of you may be anxious for an update. Truth be told though, there's not much new to report on the pups. They're all doing great and Getka, finally, really seems to be settling into motherhood. The pups are getting much more mobile and Getka much more willing to leave them for short periods of time. She even joined me today for a short session of frisbee. I'm not sure who needed that session the most... Getka or myself. She seems happy and content which is great to see.

The pups are due for their weekly weigh in and I'll get that done before going to bed tonight. A visual tells me the red girls are running neck and neck with the boys... in fact I won't be surprised if the blue collared red girl is this weeks heavy weight. Irish appears to be about half the size of the largest pups but gaining ground on the smaller girls. Honestly, I think the weights are going to be a little bit of all over the place. Anxious to see the actual numbers myself.

On the home front, we had a bit of a catastrophe yesterday when a couple of my girls, Majestic and Remedy got into a pretty heated scuffle. When taking calls from people who have a desire to add a pup to their family, one of the questions I always ask is what they have for current pets, if any, and their sexes. Dobermans typically want to be top dog in the home and it's 99% of the time always best to keep them with a dog of the opposite sex. More often than it should it seems, people want to stick with a particular sex and co-mingle that sex. Generally I do what ever I can to discourage that. Spaying and neutering can help but I still firmly believe it's best to have mixed sexes in multiple dog homes. With that said, and maybe regarding the 1% of time things are rosy, some breeds of dogs are quite passive and could care less about gaining and maintaining an alpha role. Dobermans, with some breeds, may do fine living with a dog of the same sex as long as the alpha position isn't
challenged. Another exception may be small breeds which Dobermans generally afford a break to even if the small dog is a bit of an a$$. Even so, I still believe mixed sex is best.

I consider myself to be a responsible breeder and absolutely love all it entails but it does come with it's inherent drawbacks. Multiple dogs and resulting girl fights among the pack are absolutely the biggest problem of all. It's not just an intact male thing... it's a girl thing too. I think I'm beginning to understand why many breeders, who take breeding seriously, re-home their breeding dogs once no longer breeding. What I once considered cold may actually have more to do with keeping the dogs safe. All can run smooth as silk and then all the sudden chaos erupts. Yesterdays squabble required two vet visits- one for each dog. I took Majestic shortly after the brawl occurred as I noted a laceration on the top of her head that I knew would require suturing and an ear tipping laterally. Remedy too had some lacerations around her neck that I anticipated treating at home. On closer inspection once home with Majestic though, it was obvious Remedy was definitely going to need more attention than I was capable of delivering. It appeared in fact, she received the worst of the wounds. So that's what we did this morning. Bright and early trip number two addressed multiple lacerations that extended beneath the skin much further in length than was visually evident as a result of tearing. Trip number two left Remedy with a shaved neck, a drain and me feeling very melancholy.   Borderline sick actually.  The whole thing- a really terrible experience!

Busy Day...

Today was my trial run leaving Getka unattended with her pups. Went out and swept a never ending supply of leaves which led to a nice little bon fire mid afternoon. Still don't trust Getka completely. This morning I found her moving her pups around again. This time she left the room completely and placed a pup in an open door crate in the neighboring mud room. Not quite sure why she's doing it but think it might have to do with keeping a tidy bed for them. If I don't immediately change their sheets in the morning she starts lugging them around or tearing the bed to pieces which she did only once a couple days ago. Once new bedding is placed she seems to settle.  Seems she wants to keep me on my toes. Soon, I imagine she'll be demanding twice daily bedding changes which I've never done. But I can see it coming. While I was out sweeping leaves today I'd make a pass and come back in to check on her to find her content with the pups appropriately in her box. Fortunately- because I really needed to take a trip into town. Before I left I took away all sources of comfort with the exception of those confined to the pup palace. I closed the crate and placed a large kid gate on top of my  bed. I wasn't gone long but was a little hesitant to leave the property and nervous about things until I returned. Fortunately and to my delight, when I got home, as I rounded the corner to the room I found all was well and I was able to breath a sigh of relief. I also realized how fortunate I am not to have to leave home for any extended periods anytime in the near future.  I'd be a nervous wreck.

Happy To Be Home!

So today marked the day of our first family outing and we came home a few ounces lighter- shy only of 12 sets of declaws and length of tail. Pups tolerated their procedure well. I took Getka more for her sanity than for any other purpose. Not sure who's most happy to be home- Getka, the pups or myself. Probably all... maybe equally. I think Getka though, was pretty happy to see her whelping box, now turned pup corral. Todays adventure likely served to solidify, in her mind, the box as a good home base! I've had no further episodes of her taking any of her pups outside it's walls so I think we're safe as far as that goes. I picked up a can of Esbilac and a couple syringes and will start to give Irish some supplemental feedings tomorrow. He's hanging in there though. Doing good. He's even gaining some fullness to his belly as are his litter-mates.

Appointments!

2/16/2018

Forgot to mention... appointments have been secured. Tails and dewclaws will be done tomorrow morning. Ears will be done over the course of three visits. Four pups each trip. Our cropping appointments are set for April 12th, 17th and 19th. We'll talk about which days work best for who when we get much closer to those dates. Pups are typically ready for their new homes the day after crop. We have a lot of ground to cover between now and then but just thought I'd throw it out there while it was fresh in my mind. Weights taken today will be posted tomorrow. The range is 13 ounces to 1 pound with the exception of Irish who came in as the lightweight @ only nine ounces. Yes I've already nicknamed him :-)

So as everyone knows Getka had her pups yesterday. Decided to give those on the list a call rather than making everyone wait and check the blog for count, color and sex. A couple people on the list, not surprisingly but sadly, were disappointed when we came up short 2 pups to fulfill all requests. Actually, I'm blown away by how close she came to fulfilling all requests. I wouldn't have been surprised if her list were only half fulfilled. It's tough to get it right when number, sex AND color are a factor. I guess it helps that I show my girls their lists and whisper sweet nothings in their ears while we wait.
Once the calls were behind me I admittedly felt the pressure was off as far as getting my blog updated in a timely fashion. Gave me a chance to get things put back in order following a near full day devoted to whelp watch/assist.
Getka came through like a trooper but is obviously exhausted today. And she was a little stressed this morning. Not sure what set her off. Maybe the alarm clock. She remained in her whelping box through the night and was quietly laying with her pups when the racket of the alarm sounded this morning. After a brief glance over I ventured into the next room to make some coffee and within a minute or two I heard a pup hollering. Quick to check, I found, with a pup in her mouth, Getka had jumped up on the bed. I took the pup from her and placed it back in the box. Naturally she followed but immediately grabbed another and back on the bed she went. The 2nd time I scolded her and gave her a firm no when she went to pick up a third pup. She stayed put and I finished making my coffee.
The reason for the alarm was to assure I'd be up and prepared for an early morning Vet visit for my horses. Poor Getka, with my worry she'd have the whole litter on the bed when I returned was banished to the dog run while I dealt with the horses and Vet. She was obviously not ready to spend time away from her pups. Felt bad doing it to her but I also didn't want to risk a pup rolling off or getting otherwise injured. I've hung close throughout the day, always at least within earshot and haven't had any further attempts by her to relocate her pups.

Back to yesterday, I got pretty lucky with timing as far as whelping goes. Getka's first of 13 pups came @ 3:45pm yesterday very soon after I created the blog entry predicting a daytime delivery didn't look likely. Her last pup came at 11pm. I stayed up a couple hours beyond that to assure she and pups were settled and the last was in fact the last. I'm sad to report we lost one pup during the birthing process. A good sized male born still having lost his protective sac at some point during delivery
Truly a traumatic thing to witness and I'm a little torn about writing about him but on the other hand feel it right to acknowledge his being.
I was happy to wake this morning to a thriving litter, all
eating, squirming and squeaking. A count of twelve pups- eight black males, two black females and 2 red females. Their weights measured today ran a little lighter than some litters of past but this was a big litter for Getka to support. We've both got our work cut out for us going forward. This litter produced my first true runt. He's a really tiny guy of only nine ounces. Based on size alone I'm a little concerned about him but he's doing all that the other pups are doing including pushing himself up to the milk bar unassisted. I've assigned him the green collar to hopefully instill a little luck of the irish within him. My fingers remain crossed too and hope all of you will root for him as well! Often, I've heard and read runts frequently outgrow their litter-mates. Some people feel they're the true survivors. The first few days though are critical and I'm determined to get him through those days. Then comes his ability to power through or sneak around the bigger pups. Supplimental feedings are an option too but for now he's getting in there for the good stuff.

So...  It's left to be seen whether my prediction for a Valentines Day litter comes to fruition or not. Getka remains calm, hanging out for the most part on my bed interrupted only by frequent potty breaks. Seems the pups have taken up the space previously alotted for the bladder. She started exhibiting some nesting behavior within her box last night before settling in bed with me. And again this morning.
Generally speaking dogs will skip the meal before pups arrive. It's something I watch for and once it occurs I don't leave them. I've questioned whether or not Getka, being the chow-hound that she is, will hold true to that. I hope so because it's something I've learned to really rely on when judging what I can and can't do as far as errands, or even working in and around the house, are concerned. We're getting close for sure. This morning she wasn't eager to eat and actually left her bowl after consuming about 1/4 of what I'd given her. Honestly unheard of for her!
Shortly after feeding and getting the dogs settled, I had someone come take some measurements for some half doors I'm hoping to have installed in the house. When he left, an hour or so later, I checked Getka's bowl to find it empty. Based on that, I'm not expecting a daytime delivery but Valentines day continues on through mid-night. We'll see how dinner goes this evening...

With a due date of Friday, I've got my bet in for a Valentines Day delivery. Getka's doing great... lazily meandering around the property enjoying a gorgeous North Central Florida day.
:-)

And I'm busy getting things around here caught up and orderly. Soon all non-essentials will be put on hold for a few days.

Well ahead of schedule- I got Getka's whelping box set up to give her ample time to check it out and think about using it. Not surprisingly she obviously prefers my bed over hers. I'm counting on that to change. So far I've not had a dog try and deliver a litter on my bed and hopefully Getka won't either. She hopped in and out of the box a few times and I sat in there with her briefly to get her acclimated to it. But that was it for tonight. As a rule, when we're pup free, I have one dog as a sleeping partner each night and alternate them to keep things fair and to spend some alone time with each. But normally, a week or two before a litter's due, I have to switch things up for the expectant mom. Getka's been sharing the space with me for the last several nights. Last night, for the first time, it seemed like she was checking out her options. A little restless. She jumped off the bed to lay on the floor for a while, and then went inside the open crate that had been set up for Galtero when he was younger.  She's been a little more clingy than usual which is completely normal so for her to go in the crate was a definite change. I don't like to have my dogs worry and fret about where to put their pups so the easiest thing to do is to set them up before that process begins. And for me, getting things set up early is a relief. It's a good feeling to know the task is behind me and I'm ready. I can be a bit of a procrastinator... but not typically when it comes to preparing for pups. They don't wait. Where they're concerned I'm proud to say I practice the 7 P's. Better late than never just isn't good enough.

The Count Down Begins...  Or Continues!

Greetings puppy people. We're, as they say, getting down to the wire with pups expected in just a couple short weeks. I've calculated Getka's due date as February 16th but experience tells me most Dobermans don't make it the "textbook" 63 days so maybe Valentines Day babies this year? Time will tell.

As the reservation list grows so does Getka. Even so, some of you are likely wondering just how many pups I think one dog can have. My answer -they can have fairly large litters but at this point it's a little much to ask of my girl to satisfy all requests as they stand. The last several people who came on board are fully aware and their names appear on the list hopeful for a pup this time around but fully aware they may be waiting for an upcoming litter.
The first order of business is obviously number of pups available but when not only sex but also color is a consideration the reservation list becomes far more complicated.
When anticipating a litter, my memory always takes me back to my first. A litter of 12 pups. 11 girls and one seriously outnumbered boy. It's always a bit of a gamble.

Most of you who've found my website are aware of how the blog works. I post lots of photos and try and describe how the pups are progressing on a fairly regular basis. Generally starting around the four week mark I'll create a page for each pup of the litter and add solo shots to their individual pages each week. I also weigh them and post results on the "weights" page on a fairly regular basis. Usually approximately weekly. It helps me track the progress of each and assures me no body starts to fall behind. If it's a big litter, that can turn into a snowball rather quickly for a smaller or less determined pup. I like to stay ahead of the game and if need be step in before the snowball begins to roll.  The pups will be assigned a colored collar within a day or two of birth and that color will carry through their entire time here
with me.

I encourage each of you to post comment or questions here on the blog. Often if you have a question, others will likely have the same one. Comments assure me people are actually reading the blog and knowing that gives me reason to keep on posting.
