Well ahead of schedule- I got Getka's whelping box set up to give her ample time to check it out and think about using it. Not surprisingly she obviously prefers my bed over hers. I'm counting on that to change. So far I've not had a dog try and deliver a litter on my bed and hopefully Getka won't either. She hopped in and out of the box a few times and I sat in there with her briefly to get her acclimated to it. But that was it for tonight. As a rule, when we're pup free, I have one dog as a sleeping partner each night and alternate them to keep things fair and to spend some alone time with each. But normally, a week or two before a litter's due, I have to switch things up for the expectant mom. Getka's been sharing the space with me for the last several nights. Last night, for the first time, it seemed like she was checking out her options. A little restless. She jumped off the bed to lay on the floor for a while, and then went inside the open crate that had been set up for Galtero when he was younger. She's been a little more clingy than usual which is completely normal so for her to go in the crate was a definite change. I don't like to have my dogs worry and fret about where to put their pups so the easiest thing to do is to set them up before that process begins. And for me, getting things set up early is a relief. It's a good feeling to know the task is behind me and I'm ready. I can be a bit of a procrastinator... but not typically when it comes to preparing for pups. They don't wait. Where they're concerned I'm proud to say I practice the 7 P's. Better late than never just isn't good enough.
