Meet The Parents!

Who Will It Be???

So... I bet you guys have been wondering what happened to the promised slide show! I got a late start on it this evening and then things were loading ridiculously slow. I think sometimes the server gets bogged down. Probably overloaded today from people celebrating the holiday and taking the day off from anything that resembled work yesterday. In any event I finally got 'er done. I also sent out invoices today for the agreed upon second deposits so keep an eye out for those coming your way via Paypal.

As you can see, these pups are starting to look like little doggies! It's kind of hard to catch them in action because they continue to sleep the majority of the time. Eat sleep and repeat. That's their life right now. I reviewed and compared the weights of the last litter to this and it seems these guys are right on target. Skye seems to be slacking to me but I guess she's doing what she needs to with her kids. She does seem to spend considerably more time on my bed rather than with her pups. As long as they're growing and thriving I'm ok with that. Not too much I could do about it I guess if I weren't. I generally introduce my pups to mash around 4 weeks but can start them a little earlier if need be. Kind of up to my girl how things go forward from here. I think she appreciated me taking the needle sharp tips off the pups nails. Seems a little more inclined to hang with them since so I'll keep an eye on them and maybe clip them a little more frequently than I normally do. I guess all dogs are different too, and like human moms they have different ideas of the best way to mother.  Will be interesting to see what kind of a disciplinarian she is when they start getting rambunctious. She has kind of a funny look to her in a couple of these pictures when Yellow comes up to snuggle around her head. She's looking at her like "now what do you think you're doing"? And look at Red go! Scaling her back like a big dog! Right before he fell over and slid down her side! They're a joy to watch.

Still A Work In Progress...

Well, as usual I didn't get all done that I thought I might. But I couldn't let the day get away without acknowledging our 2 week birthday. A couple more holidays to get through and these pups will officially become yours to cherish. Until then, I get to enjoy them.
I did get the important stuff done. The babes got their first taste of something other than mothers milk today... On thanksgiving no less. They received the first of a series of dewormers. They also got their nails tipped and weights logged. The little orange collared girl is exactly one pound shy of the biggest pup. She's a strong little one though. Just as mobile and agile as all others if not more so. I think the lighter ones have an easier time of propelling themselves. Another of the girls, Yellow, is a heavy weight running neck and neck with the largest of the boys. I expect some fluctuations to occur going forward but regardless of current weights, all pups are doing great. Their eyes are open but have a milky look to them. Totally normal and vision poor to non-existent at this point. They remain very wobbly in their attempts to walk but get stronger and more active with each passing day. And as predicted they're barking and even growling at times. And giving kisses. I got my first little kisses today as I cuddled them up to the nape of my neck providing breaks and gentle handling between completing the above mentioned tasks.

And I took photos. While I'd hoped to get them posted tonight, I'm afraid there's just not enough time in the day. But tomorrow is another and this is an ongoing process. For now, I'll leave you with my favorite and say goodnight.

Just a quick check in to wish everyone a happy holiday! Hope there's good food and lots of cheer!

I'm cooking today but also have a fairly full plate.

I big day for your pups and one for which I'm going to attempt their first individual photo shoot!  It's way early bit I'm going to give it a try.

Hope to have a thorough update this evening... may be late but that's my plan.

Feast and be Merry!

Growing More...

Seems like every time I look at these little guys and girls, which is all the time, they've grown. They change so fast. They're starting to make some attempts to walk rather than just scoot around. Eyes should start to open any day now. While their vision remains poor for quite a while, they apparently are able to see shadows at the least, and begin moving about with more of a purpose. The black pup with a brownish cast continues to look slightly brown in some photos and in certain lights but doesn't look at all like the reds. I still don't know quite what to make of him. Interesting he happens to be wearing a red collar eh? He continues to catch my eye now and then. And interest...

Skye remains the main caretaker of the pups. I the bed changer which includes frequent changes of my own. Her time on my bed and away from the bed belonging to her and the pups increases it seems a little bit each day. My Velcro of all  Velcro's won't settle without her cuddles and lovin'. As Velcro as she is I did have concerns in the beginning that I may end up sleeping in the whelping box with all. Fortunately it didn't play out that way. Skye's been great!

And me, for now, I'm just enjoying the innocence and gentle little voices that lull me to sleep. A period of time that's fairly short lived. Before long they'll be bouncing around and gnawing on each other. And barking!

Your pups are doing great...  Orange remains the smallest pup and not surprisingly gained the least over the course of the last few days. At this point while gaining slightly less than some of the others, I feel her gain is appropriate in relation to the others based on size at birth.  She has chalked up 7 ounces which is close to the gains of Purple and Blue who each gained 8. The bulk of the litter gained 9 to 11 ounces each.

Their tails and dew claws are healing well and as expected I remain quite happy with Skye's mother skills. All is well in the land of pups!

Seventy-Two Hours

Skye and her pups are doing great!!! I'm very happy to report she's mothering like a pro having never been a mom before! She started off a little rough but quickly gentled. The whelping box I created a couple litters back was designed so the bedding is secured by the box itself so there's no way pups can get trapped beneath. I had given Skye a small blanket though so she had something to toss around and dig at in order to satisfy her nesting instincts. When the first pup came and she was getting ready for number two, I grew a little concerned. As mentioned she started off a little rough. Hadn't started nursing yet and it appeared she was trying to bury her pup in the blanket. I eased and guided her, keeping the pup safe. But after watching her for a while I think she was simply trying to assure the pup was safe and out of the way while she was otherwise occupied. She did seem to struggle a little juggling pups with the act of delivering others. Understandably, I guess a little stressed. I've not yet missed the birth of a litter and hope I never do. Especially ones first. I'm glad I was there for Skye. It's got to be stressful even though these things basically come instinctually for dogs. I think we've bred a good chunk of that instinct out of them when we domesticated them eons ago. Considering how long they've relied on us for their safety and security, it's amazing they continue to do as good as they do. Skye is very settled now and careful with her pups. She lays gently and is aware of their positions in relation to herself. I'm proud of her! And the pups? Proud of them to! They're thriving! It's a nice sized litter. Large enough to satisfy all on the wait list but unfortunately not when color became a factor. As a result a couple people unfortunately were disappointed and two red pups remain available. The latter is ok. I don't expect their availability to last long.  For those disappointed, I'm sorry we couldn't come through. The gamble is always there and discussed but that in itself doesn't make the disappointment any easier to take.

The pups and their momma! Their first few days!

From The Beginning!

A late entry. Late, because it wasn't a sure thing! A very busy time surrounded our conception. We, now known as the the "Hurricane Irma Litter" ushered her in. What a storm! Conceived just one day before she hit, our mom -as planned was away from home visiting dad. But that storm  -it was closing in. The reports were coming quickly and with each report a change. There was talk of pulling mom early. There was talk of evacuations. But as the reports came in it was tough to tell exactly where we'd find safety from the storm. Where would we be most safe? Finally a decision was made. It was somewhat spur of the moment but in the end a decision all could live with.

As dads' humans were in the process of loading horses to evacuate before eventually evacuating themselves, mom and dad we're told had a rendezvous behind the RV shed. Up to this point they'd played and teased and simply enjoyed the company of one another. Their courtship! But maybe they too sensed they were racing against the clock. Or maybe it just boiled down to timing in general. Whatever their reason, they took advantage of the privacy granted while those horses were working on loading. One, the young one was giving Lynk's humans a fit! And the seed was planted!
Finally the horses, well most of them, were on there way!

Next up... us!

As it turns out that horse trailer became a multipurpose vehicle! We, sheltered by mom, jumped in the "living quarters". Dad, along with some other Dobermans and the resident farm dog, Buck, were loaded in back. A couple cats and a small dog found their place along with the humans in the truck as we prepared to make our way to Hawthorne. We were about to venture off for our first road trip! Basically when it comes right down to it, it was a glorified "camp trip"! Glorified only because there was a house. Camping because all modern conveniences were quickly lost. A trip of a lifetime though, that's for sure!  We, the humans and the rest of their pack joined Moms human back in Hawthorne. We were just getting settled in when some others..., Doberman people too, joined in for the experience. With them, came an assortment of animals. There was another cat, a couple small dogs, some goats of all things and of course more Dobermans! There were a lot of us. Twenty-six dogs in all including the little ones!  It was a little cramped but everyone was on their very best behavior. Including the humans! They, it seemed, were the most stressed of all! I guess it probably was a little stressful being responsible for the safety of so many. But we're told, it was kind of exciting and fun too! Most importantly though we weathered the storm and survived! There will be others I'm sure. But we'll be prepared. And again, with this experience behind us we'll again survive!  We are Dobermans!

Appointments

Well I didn't get to the slide show. Got caught up in some phone calls and emails. Leaves me something to do tomorrow.

Forgot to mention -appointments have been secured. Tails and dew claws will be done Monday afternoon. Cropping appointments have been secured as well. The first group of five will be done Thursday January 4th and the final four go in on Tuesday January 9th. Pups are generally able to join their families the day after cropping as long they receive their health certificates as expected and behaving as I knew them to behave pre-crop
. We've got a lot of ground to cover between now and then but wanted to pass along the information in case some of you need advance notice to plan schedules. We will decide which pups go in on which day at a much later time trying to accommodate all schedules best we can. GN.
