New Digs... And Tails!

Just wanted to assure everyone Getka and the pups have adjusted quite well to their new habitat. I think Getka is enjoying it. More room and a larger ottoman. Doubt the pups noticed since they can't see or hear yet. In any event everyone's doing great and new weights are posted. Boys are running a little bigger than the girls for the most part with just a couple exceptions. But wow... look at Copper go! Born the heaviest... and a girl no less...  and retains that title today! Yellow isn't far behind and is giving the boys a run for their money!

One Week Today!!!

5/28/2021

Wow! Where did the week go? Fast for me. Probably moving at a snails pace for you. The pups are doing great. Getka's settled and starting to spend a little time away from them. Rests on the floor outside the box short intervals. No longer seems panicked to get back in immediately after being let out to do her business. She seems content and confident in her duties.

The pups are beginning to plump up a bit. A couple of them seem to have really undergone a growth spurt past few days. A few, at a glance, appear a little smaller but all are doing well. Due for another round of weights tomorrow.

They've changed quite a bit over the course of the week. Not as evident in photos I don't think, as it is watching their whole being. I'm beginning to hear an occasional bark rather than just moans, groans and squeaks. And what was originally heard as somewhat of a purr seems to be turning to somewhat of a growl. They're constantly testing their little voices. And their legs. For the most part they're figuring out how to use them. Last night as I was hanging out with the pack while catching an episode of my current series, I witnessed one of the red and rust pups actually walk the entire length of the whelp box, turn and walk back the other direction. Pretty advanced for his age. His mobility's outpacing that of all his siblings. The others aren't far behind -but for the most part continue to drag their bellies. While their legs are beginning to work in unison, their movement still resembles more of a crawl.

Finally got Ritz's set up complete yesterday but have already decided a change of plan is in best interest of all. I think I mentioned in comment somewhere along the way I planned to have Ritz whelp in my computer room providing her with her own suite. The room is separated from the rest of the house by half doors. Figured I would camp out on a chair/ottoman combo for the first couple nights. It's a solid plan, but I think worthy of an adjustment. I really like to have my brand new moms set up next to my bed. More comfortable for me and it's what they've grown accustomed to. Therefore probably more comfortable for them too. Kind of sticking with the old motto of "if it's not broken, don't fix it".

New plan... I've moved Getka and the babes into the "suite" and I'm in the process of setting Ritz up in my bedroom. I plan to complete that task this afternoon so Getka has a chance to get resettled with the new arrangement before night falls. Seems to be doing well so far. I'll spend the night on the chair ottoman combo if I sense any uneasiness. Don't think I will though. And at the moment, one night of that chair and ottoman set up sounds far better than several. For the most part, I can sleep through anything.... hurricanes, thunderstorms, alarm clocks etc. etc. But the sound of a tiny pup will wake me up every time. And a muffled sound is easy to pick up if they're right next to you. Important in the first few days of life.

So that's the plan. New digs for the babes! 3 more weeks and their set up and location will change once again! Creating flexibility.... :-)

Thanks for your responses to the pickup schedule. Pending any unforeseen circumstances I think the schedule is set. Jennifer, Bev and Sherry all know each other, live in the same general area and plan to carpool. They're set for pickup on the 17th, along with Andrew, April and Miguel.
The pups selected by Mike, Dalanda, Mitch, Rod and Lori along with the pup I'm holding back, in the event I do hold back, will have their crops done on the 20th for a pick up date of the 21st. Hope that works for all.

As far as the selection process goes, The 6 week mark, which normally marks the start of the selection process lands on the 4th of July weekend. Seems I'm pretty good at hitting holidays. Either with births, cropping schedules or pick up dates.
Anyway, the first appointment for selection has been set. Rod, with his wife Wanda plan to arrive July 3rd to chose their girl. With so many girls in the litter it's important for everyone to look at their schedules and set a date that allows for all to get here before the pups go for their crops. I spoke with Lori this afternoon and after speaking with her husband she'll get back with me on a date that works for them. We'll go from there. Timing isn't as critical for the boys.

A little news...

First of all Baby Boy Blue wins the prize today for most photogenic. Even if his collar doesn't look particularly blue anymore. And this photo wasn't even taken today, but Sunday. Surprising how dirty they get in such a short span of time. I placed the collars Saturday evening when I weighed them and already dirty by Sunday. Same with bedding. Changed daily along with a wash of the walls but stays clean less than an hour and gets pretty ugly within a short period of time. Getka is still having quite a bit of uterine cleansing going on that will persist for a while. It's so tempting to diaper her up but that would present quite the challenge for the littles.... so it is what it is.

Yesterday the pups experienced their first road trip and a quickie exam by our Vet prior to having their tails and dew claws done. I took half the pack in the morning leaving half with Getka. The return trip with the other six in the afternoon completed phase one of Breed Specific Beautification.

Ear cropping is also going to require a couple trips. Appointments have been secured so now is a good time to check your calendars and schedules! The first group of six with be done Friday, July 16th and the remaining group will be done Tuesday July 20th. I prefer the pups are picked up the day after cropping so no inadvertent harm is done to their surgical wear. So....  if anyone has a preference for one date over the other please let me know. I'll try my best to accommodate all but it's going to come down to how requests for specific dates come in. If date doesn't matter to some of you, I'll just plug those pups into whichever date needs to be filled. I know everyone will be chomping at the bit to pick up their pups but sometimes a day or two wait is appreciated by those who have to travel distance and have various family members doing various things on every given day.

Thanks to each of you for your previous comments. And to my previous pup-pals, it's heartwarming to see you still check in!!! We're actually
working toward a tie between comments received from those who already have pups and the "the newbies".  :-)
A bit skewed though... we have 3 repeats in the current crowd and only one repeat so far has chosen to speak up. Funny that. If memory serves the thus far silent were fairly quiet the first time around as well.

Hope everyone has a great evening!!! We are well.

Welcome To The Blog!

Hello Pup Pals! Now that the dust has had a chance to settle, I'm going to play a little catch up.

As each of you on the wait list are aware, Getka welcomed her litter of 12 precious babes on the 21st. Each one loaded with potential that is Doberman. I look forward to getting to know each and every one and getting them through their first eight weeks before officially handing the reins over to their new families.

There will be many photos and updates here in the coming weeks so check back often. And don't be shy about commenting. Questions and or comments. The interaction makes blogging considerably more fun for me. Additionally, if you have questions there's a good chance others may have the same ones.

So, the past few days have been busy ones... Getka began the nesting process around 11pm Thursday night just as I was getting ready to turn in. Exhausted. And I thought, oh boy.... here we go. It's showtime.
But, fortunately for me she settled and we both got some sleep. Her first pup arrived at 7am Friday. It's not too often I'm blessed with a daytime delivery. But when they occur, they're always appreciated!

The whelping process and the lead up always create quite a bit of anxiety for me.  But with each successful delivery, that anxiety slowly began to dissipate. It seemed my girl was likely done around five.  I quickly changed out the birthing bedding with some fresh sheets and settled in to simply relax, watch some TV and hang out with Getka and our new arrivals. Watching and listening... monitoring.

Our last pup arrived around 5pm... at least the last one I witnessed. But she had a holdout providing me with a morning surprise. One more than I counted the night before.

All in all Getka, with such a large litter, did a great job of fulfilling our current reservation list. Especially on the female side of things. We did come up a little short on males but Hopefully Ritz will soon step up to the plate and fulfill those requests.

Yesterday was another day of watching and monitoring. And some relaxing. I also made my calls to update all on the reservation list. The list has been adjusted accordingly, and a new "upcoming litter" tab added above. With just one red male and one red female, Mitch (and Holly) as well as Dalanda can watch the blog and their pups specifically right out the gate. The rest of you will be held in anticipation until roughly the 6-7 week mark when the selection process begins. The pups will begin their outdoor excursions around the 4 week mark. And by 6 weeks each will have gained some confidence and some personality will begin to develop.  I'll try and make the wait and the process enjoyable for all.

I'm happy to report my girl has settled in well to her role as mom. She was a bit of a nightmare with her first litter. But as they say, practice brings forth perfection.

Below are a few pics taken the day and evening of arrival.
