Pups Are Officially Packing Papers...

Everyone received a clean bill of health and their Health Certificates yesterday. Ears remain a work in progress. Edges are still pretty raw and margins remain a little swollen... All part of the normal healing progress. But overall looking good.

I've decided to claim Pink as my own and have decided to name her Dazzle. I think. I'm sure on my selection at this point. The name remains a bit up in the air. So far for a registered name I've got Got My Back's Dazzling Diva. Personally, I usually pick a call name and then create a Registered name that, at least to a degree, incorporates that name. Many AKC dogs though have call names that carry zero reference to their registered name.

Sounds like the first pup of the litter is scheduled to leave us this Saturday. Adam and Adrienne want to pick their boy up and finish the ear care on their own. As I mentioned before, I'm ok with that, but would rather everyone else wait the few extra days for healing so I can demonstrate technique and some hands on experience with a solid and well established tape and post.

Seems this has been a fairly dull blog with little input from pup pals other than those who already have some, nearing adult, pups of mine. I think those couple people have been more active here than those waiting for pups from this particular litter. Owners of the litter have been pretty involved in personal messages, phone calls and emails and as a result even I have kind of lost interest in the blog. Some time go actually. Hopefully the next litter will be a bit more interactive. I always appreciate the back and forth dialog. Between myself and pups pals and communication between pup pals. Every litter has been different. Going forward, I may reformat and get away from a blog form of updating. Less expectations on my end that way. But also no way to place comment if one chooses.

Regardless of format I will always update.

Hope everyone has their abodes fairly well set for the arrival of puppies at this point. Puppy proofing as they say. As a reminder, the pups are currently eating IAMS Large Breed Puppy and are doing well on it. If anyone wants to pre shop for a basic collar, I recommend the adjustable nylon in a size 10-12 or 14 inch length. They grow quickly so the adjustable will prevent the need to go out every couple weeks in search of a replacement.

Hope all is well. Any last minute questions, please don't hesitate to ask. And yes, asking here is fine. Part of transparency. Additionally, if you have a question, others waiting on a pup may share the same or similar and will benefit from the answer provided. I don't claim to have the perfect answer for every question but I do my best.

I have a question! We bought the IAMS large breed puppy and on the back they have a chart of how much to feed them per day. Do you follow that? Thank you!!

Good question... Right now they're eating about 9 cups 3 times a day between them. I guess I would start with a cup three times a day and work up to 2 cups a day fairly quickly but decrease feedings to twice daily. I don't worry about pups getting fat. Once they leave and the competition for food becomes non existence they frequently go on the picky side.

Sounds good to me! I also had a question regarding raised food bowls for when Niko is older. I’ve been reading conflicting articles and I thought I had seen a previous post on your blog about that but now I can’t seem to find it. Any suggestions?? I thought it helps their joints but maybe not good for bloating?

I try and steer clear of controversy in general... Often it arises from "an idea" and not documented research. Dogs have been eating from the ground since the beginning of time. Someone somewhere along the line interjected human "preference"... As you say it's controversial. No documentation per say to say feeding from elevated bowls is particularly beneficial. Some documentation/research that implicates it's harmful.

Hi Debi, for those of us who will be waiting on the pups ears to heal, what dates are we looking at?

Very hard to judge... generally speaking human or animal incisions tend to heal within seven to ten days. I would say by next weekend pups should be ready to post. May be earlier by a couple days... may be later by a couple days but that's my best guesstimate.

Thanks for the update, Debi! Glad to hear they’re all doing well. Not that I doubted they were. They’re in the best of best hands.
Adrienne asked exactly what I was wondering. Thanks for the info.
Looking forward to bringing Titan home soon. Jonathon is anxiously awaiting too. Such an exciting time! :)

Many vets in this area do not accept the Florida Dept. of Agriculture "Official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (FDACS-09086 Rev 01/18)" and signed as record proof of immunizations and require (in addition) the actual/copy of the servicing veterinary clinic canine puppy "shot record" as proof. It seems to be a liability issue if the vet/clinic offers boarding.

That's a new one on me... May be a ploy to add an additional immunization to their charge. In which case I'd question that Vet. The Official Certificate Of Veterinary Inspection clearly states which vaccinations were administered, including lot numbers and date administered. It, when signed is an official record. Do you have a reference you can share that states otherwise Rod?

Agreed on the added profit center ploy by enterprising vets and their accountants. There are also allegations (by veterinarians and clinics) of fraudulent use of the FDACS-09086 form which can be copied off the "My Florida" website and used as fraudulent official documentation particularly by client boarders. We live is a strange new world.

I am getting this from several friends who are licensed and practicing clinic owners in Tampa area and Gainesville. We do not board as a practice but there can be times where it can be unavoidable and this can be an untimely surprise. Also, if the official forms can be hacked to the point where reputable practices can not/will not accept State data, what is the next issue?

Not sure actually... but like you say we live in a strange world today. I came to the conclusion some time back, surprisingly and unfortunately, nothing can or would surprise me anymore. I don't care to board my dogs either and have rarely, almost never, done so. In any event I would hope you're not planning to board your pup prior to being fully vaccinated at approximately 4 months of age. Which ever Vet you choose going forward will maintain it's shot records and likely give you some sort or "passport". For now, the pups, as a litter were vaccinated as a litter ny my Vet and named by collar color only. Question of same I suppose could be verified via titer. Questions I assume can be addressed to my Vet from your Vet via phone. When it comes right down to it, there's a paper trail for essentially everything today. Fraudulent or not. If fraudulent it's generally discoverable.

Hi Debi, I just wanted to check on the pups. How is the healing process coming along?

Hi Rashad, sorry for the delayed response. Pups are doing great and ears are getting there. A bit slower than anticipated though. I put ointment on their ears two or three times a day but they quickly lick it off each other. I would imagine will be completely healed within a day or two.
