We've got the green light!!!
These pups officially have their travelin' papers and they're ready to broaden their horizons!

A great day all in all. The Vet had a couple appointments scheduled ahead of us so I didn't even have to get up with the chickens this time around. Still early but it was a nice change not to have to load in the dark or at the crack of dawn. We sailed through both directions without so much as a traffic hiccup and didn't even experience rain until half way home. We even lucked out with a break in the clouds and only a slight drizzle over head on our arrival home!
The pups enjoyed a breath of fresh air and got a chance to stretch their legs before heading to their corral for the night. Resting now- Apollo, Cam, Nyx and Oak are doing great, looking beautiful -and handsome!!! I'll try and keep them as quiet as possible through the evening then tomorrow they'll be rearing to go. From the looks of them, they're rearing to go now but I'm using the better post operative judgement of the bunch and demanding quiet time.

The Last Leg Of Breed Specific Beautification!

I'll update when we get home from the office. And hopefully I'll get a chance to get some fresh photos of each Wednesday before they're off to broaden their horizons! I purposely held off on week eight photos in anticipation of a whole new look. Pups are doing great and are ready to meet the artist. As always I wish for them a day without complication and for all of us the issuance of heath certificate which will be their green light to go!

Geez... Meant to post this photo a couple days ago and got wrapped up and never got back to it. Our last meet and greet for the litter came Saturday evening when Chrissie came to meet her boy Oakley, aka "Oak"! Come to find out, Chrissie is friends with another of my pup-pals from several litters back. Coincidence actually but now the two will have an additional topic of conversation. Dobermans. Lou and Oak specifically. Different parents but still one big family! The ever growing GMBD family. For Chrissie, I think it was love at first sight! She seems more than ready to welcome Oak to her family. Great to meet you Chrissie. Sorry for the delayed post.

Mom And Pups!

Some old photos I took a couple weeks ago but somehow never found time to post. And I guess, on top of being busy, based on feedback, it wasn't real apparent my entries were actually being seen. Recently though, I've had a chance to speak with everyone and have been assured each and every post has been seen... and appreciated. So... what can I say? Better late than never I guess. Historically the mom and pup series have been some of my favorites. Fun to shoot to. Funny though, after watching several moms with their pups I'm still not sure what the lessons being taught by them are all about. I do know some pups get off easier with mom than others. And no mom in the process has ever hurt one of them. Some have gotten a little riled up and some have even tried their best to put up a fight while others just lay low and hope for the best. Those are the pups that have an easy time of things as a rule.

One week to go before we see a whole new look! The look that at the end of the day completes "The Doberman Standard". Cones coming up... a week from today!!!

One week remaining for each of you on the wait list to complete your final preparations too!
As far as food goes, I think I mentioned earlier, there are several good foods to choose from. The pups are eating Victor Professional and are thriving on it. My adults eat Victor HiPro Plus. But the choice is yours. If you select a brand outside of Victor please let me know when you arrive to claim your pups and I'll give you some kibble to ease the transition from Victor to your chosen food. For those who've decided on the heavily marketed grain free products I encourage you to do some research regarding health risks associated with grain free diets. Lots of controversy out there regarding dog foods now and my opinion is everyone should invest some time in research and not rely on marketing. I refrain from recommending one food over another because its seems one week something is the greatest thing ever created and the next it's determined to be a killer. Doesn't matter if we're talking eggs or dog food.

I finally got everyone weighed for the week and those weights will be the last set I'll do here at home. The pups are getting too big for my scale! They'll be weighed one last time while in my care though. Pre-operatively. I log those numbers for week eight. Pretty impressive gains over the past 9 days though averaging about 4 pounds each. Growing quick!!!

Personalities are developing quickly too. Ready for that one on one they crave at this age. They're very happy in the company of each other but I think happiest with one on one human/dog companionship. It's what they were bred for and it seems pretty obvious Karl Dobermann knew what he wanted and how to get it when he created the breed. So many innate traits that I see repeat in these pups regardless of parentage. And in the parents themselves. I'm sure it's true of other breeds. Each carries unique traits specific to breed. But I always say there really is no better dog than a Doberman. A dog bred for the purpose of "personal" protection. And with that job comes the Velcro nature we, as fans of the breed, enjoy and appreciate. It's a trait that can be troublesome too though. While we love and value it, it's important the pups learn early on that they're ok in their own skin. To avoid separation anxiety later in life it's important for them to have alone time. To accomplish this, my recommendation is crate training. Crate training that begins day one. Their first night at home. Often people are so excited to have a puppy in their life the pup ends up in the bed with them. New place, new people... new bed. For the pup that's the new norm. I urge people, for the benefit of the pup, to make day one the real new norm. Don't wait a week to decide what you want your norm to look like. It's easier on the pups to have an established routine from the start. Bedtime day one... in the crate they go. Morning... out they come. The first night they may put up a bit of a fuss and may wake you with a whine because they weren't expecting to have to hold it ALL night! But by day two or three they should settle right in and be able to make it through the night as long as not allowed to drink loads of water prior to retiring. Pick it up a few hours before bed. And when they do their business outside praise praise praise! And treats. Can't forget to take a handful or pocket full of treats with you in the middle of the night during those early days. If they do good reward them. Always remember to reward good behavior. It's ok to use that stern voice to tell them they're a "bad dog" when they're being bad... but you have to tell them they're a good dog when they're being good too. When you look at them and they're just sitting there, not causing you any trouble... they're being a good dog. Let them know you appreciate it. Acknowledge it like you would if they weren't being so good. But remember... always remember to love them -good or bad! One day, not so far away, you'll think back and laugh wondering where those days of badness went. Love your pups. For me and for them. Do right by them and they'll do right by you.

Pretty disappointed in my camera for action shots... My previous one, which was unfortunately drug through the sand by an unmentioned pup, was considerably better at filtering out noise. Lots of blur in these photos but, if you can look beyond it, they show a glimpse of personality of each.
And fun. Lots and lots of fun! It's what being a pup is all about!!!

Puppy Selections Complete!!!

So, today delivered a couple new names and another friendly face. Jerry arrived this morning to get acquainted with the two, so far unselected pups. Watching him as he watched the pups I think he was hoping one would jump out at him and say, "Hey, I'm Yours!". And in watching from a distance I think one did although in all honesty it was pretty close. Both pups sociable, both eager to come with some enticement and follow once engaged. Purple again, a bit more outgoing and most consistently engaged. As a result he received his name and I think everyone on our list is happy with the pup that will officially become theirs in just under a couple weeks. Jerry selected the name Apollo for his boy purple after I convinced him their were already too many Zeus's. I myself have four in previous litters, two of which are in the same litter. I much prefer Apollo.

When I called to inform Chrissie which boy she could call her own we discussed Jerry's visit and interaction with the two, including what he'd decided for a name. She responded, "funny that (Apollo) was my first choice but I was outvoted by the kids. She and her kids were quickly able to settle on the name Oakley for their boy in blue as soon as it was tossed on the table for consideration. So Oakley it is... Oak for short. I love the name and informed her it's somewhat of a family name as Serious has a brother named the same.

Names are funny! Sometimes many hours are put into research. I spent hours and hours deciding on a name for Ritz only to have it lost in translation or red tape on her FCI registration. So disappointing but something we'll now forever live with. Once registered... they're registered.
Sometimes a name just pops in one's head. And sometimes the pups do something and essentially name themselves. Sandy and Tom informed me they had selected the name Thor for their boy, Mr Green, during their visit. A few days later though I received a call asking if it would be a problem if it were changed. The change stems back to a FB post I published of Mr Green a while back, covered in sand, attempting to settle in for a snooze. I titled the photo "Camouflage" for obvious reasons. Someone commented on the photo, stating Cam would be a good name =or nickname. I'd have to agree, though naming him wasn't my intention. A couple days went by after Sandy and Toms visit and I received a call asking if it would create any trouble if they were to change it... My reply "of course not". Apparently, after reviewing his photo on Facebook they came to conclude Camouflage a great name -Cam for short! I love it!!! It suits him.

So, Once again it's getting late and I'm still sitting here sorting photos. Getting there but not quite there and have an early morning tomorrow. Came across this group of photos though and thought they were worthy of the story behind them. Purple gave me a run for my money today as I struggled with his photo shoot. A busy little pup he was. And as it turns out, a quick thinker and brave too! As somewhat of a last ditch effort I decided to venture over toward the kennel where Serious and Majestic were enjoying a gorgeous day while at the same time out of my hair allowing me some uninterrupted time with pups and the camera. I discovered some time back, when pups follow me in that direction, the adults will generally offer a bark at the littles as we approach which stops them in their tracks as they cautiously assess the situation. That brief period usually gives me a decent chance at a shot or two before the pups realize all is well and carry on following. Purple was funny though... as he heard the bark, he looked at options and immediately saw a potential safe spot in the igloo dog house which sits along side the drive awaiting it's permanent placement. He wasted no time taking a glance inside and then, without a second thought, in he went with a quick turn around so he could see what was going on. He stood in there briefly and watched. He didn't seem particularly intimidated, just cautious. Then bravery took over as he hopped out and ventured over to say hello to dad. Serious greeted him with interest but fairly short lived interest. Once the interaction all but ceased, Purple ventured over to the other side of the shed to greet the girls, Getka, Skye and Remedy. He bravely and determinedly walked the line and said hello to each. For whatever reason, and worth mentioning I guess, he bypassed Galtero. He was a bit playful with Remedy but in the end settled in next to Getka. Pretty cute to watch. Some pups will boldly walk up to the adults... most don't though, without at least some encouragement.

Welcome Week Six!!!

Just a little over two weeks till these babes go in for their crops in preparation of joining their families. It's been a busy week but a good one. Weather wise we've enjoyed some gorgeous days! Not too hot and not to cold and very minimal rain. A few drizzles here and there. A nice change. Early in the week I took the pups out individually for some time with mom. Photos of each were taken but I've yet to find time to get them uploaded. This evening I managed to go through them to select my favorites. So, maybe tomorrow. That's the plan tonight anyway.

After what seems like months of never ending crappy weather I decided it was time to take advantage of the break in weather and check off a couple outdoor projects from the to do list. Friday was set aside to do some repairs on the small dog run off the back of the house. Adjoining the run is a large deck surrounded by privacy fence and off the deck, a large 8x4 dog house. It's the spot I generally reserve for pups as they get older. A spot where they can enjoy some extended outdoor time on nice days, get used to another form of containment and experience a wide range of stimulation as I go about chores around the ole homestead. Chores of late have centered around rotting wood. Old wood and constant dampness caused by rain have proven to be a bad combination! I noticed a small hole in the flooring of the dog house a couple litters back which over the course of time, with the help undoubtedly of a bit of chewing and digging, has only grown in size. Seems these things never fix themselves. As far as the fencing goes, it too was starting to deteriorate along the bottom edge to the point a determined pup could potentially squeeze under or get caught up in an attempt. So... repairs were in order and I'm happy to say, now complete. In the process, the pups had a chance to get acquainted with some banging and clattering going on around them as well as the sounds of power tools. Then today, safe and secure, they settled in to the newly revamped area while I rode the rider around the property. They looked on with interest as the big bad Hustler approached and then retreated. Then seemingly unfazed, they resumed busying themselves with a few toys and each other under a very light intermittent drizzle. And I made good progress on leaf collection and general spring cleaning.

Yesterday we enjoyed visits from Sandy and Tom who arrived to get the selection process of the boys started. As expected and as is typical there was a bit of back and forth going on but at the end of the day it was my green collared boy who won them over. They've decided on the name Thor!

Next up, just as Sandy and Tom were heading out, Nate along with his wife and son arrived to meet their girl. Interestingly enough, Nate called me a while back when he noticed a pup from my last litter was given the name he'd chosen for his girl. I assured him it really wasn't a problem... that at least it wasn't Zeus of which there are four! So Nyx it is for the little princess of the litter.

The pups were quick to warm up to new comers and seemed to love the additional interaction and attention. But I'll tell you what -it's true what they say! A tired puppy is a good puppy! They slept like rocks once back in their habitat following the visits. In all their outing probably consisted of about four hours. A lot for pups. Knowing this I held Nyx back while Sandy and Tom were here for fear she'd be worn out and sleep through Nate's visit. As it turned out the boys started to wind down and were taken in individually as their batteries began to weaken. Their stamina though is definitely increasing!!! Nate informs me it's unlikely the whole family will be able to make the trip for pick up so I decided yesterday was the day if any to get their first official family photo!

And tomorrow, I'm hopeful I'll get week seven photos taken and uploaded. Weights are posted!
