Pick Your Pup

Purple... what to do or think about Purple.... It goes without saying that she's gotten a rough start but it also goes without saying she's a fighter. Her first photo shows her today at half the weight of her next in line sibling. Although the photo doesn't demonstrate her spirit, I've seen it. Yesterday she traversed the whelping pool like it was nobodies business... she's been eating and has never acted "sick". She wakes quickly and fully. She's responsive. She just isn't growing, despite the added time and attention I've been able to give her assuring she gets some quality nursing time. The vicious circle grows ever more vicious though with each passing hour as the rest of the litter is outgrowing and overpowering her. I decided today to take her in for a Vet check and in the end agreed to place her in Foster Care. At this point I'm not sure what the outcome will be. I can only say, I hope we see more of Purple as the days or weeks progress. Although I don't care to save a pup that will be less than it should be, I also don't want to loose a pup if it's just a simple matter of nutrition. Purple was my first born pup so I know she got her share of colostrum which is undeniably important. Time will tell, but I'm pulling for this little girl. I'll be receiving updates from Reggie, her foster mom and will post the updates here.

10-15-14.......Called to check on my Baby. She's doing well per the report I received but Reggie did resort to tubing her as she didn't really want to latch on to the bottle. I guess I'm not surprised because a bottle is a whole lot different than mom.
10-16-14..... Today I went to visit Precious Purple and I've gotta say, she looks FABULOUS!!!!
I wish I would have taken my camera.
It was lunchtime. She had just finished eating and felt solid and full! Reggie's still tube feeding her but reports she took to the bottle last night when offered it by Reggie's daughter and attempted to lap when her re-placer was offered in a bowl. All music to my ears! After seeing her today, I have no further doubts that I did the best possible thing I could have done for her by leaving her in Reggie's care. I also have no doubt we'll be seeing more of Precious Purple. In preparation to leave I placed the pup back in her box along with a fresh towel carrying the scent of her litter mates. Reggie and I continued to chat and Purple, standing on her back legs clambered and clawed attempting to escape her temporary habitat. When I say she looks fabulous I'm not kidding. She's alert, active, solid and strong! Seeing her made my day!!! This weekend I'll be working and Purple will be included in a get away Reggie had previously planned; to visit with and celebrate her mom's birthday. With that said, Purple will be experiencing her first camping trip. Yep that's right, believe it or not, at 2 1/2 weeks of age, she's goin' camping!!! Fortunately though, there's an RV involved because Purple, simply due to her age, still requires a heating pad to stay warm. My fear today is that this is going to be one rotten pup when it's all said and done. Yep, spoiled rotten to the core! :-)

10/21/14.... Went to visit Purple, now lovingly referred to by Reggie as "Sweet Pea" and by her daughter as "Tater Tot"! Whatever she's called by whomever, she continues to do great. She's rambunctious, spoiled and barking.... and sucking up a storm! I've got a hickey on my chin to prove it. As soon as I picked her up for a cuddle she grabbed hold and marked me before I realized what the end result would be. She's gaining weight, eating well from the bottle and no longer tube fed. I'm planning to bring her home early next week once my work week is complete so she can interact with the rest of the litter and learn appropriate puppy behavior. I dropped off some chow for Reggie to introduce since I plan to get the rest of the litter started on semi solids this week. I asked Reggie how she was holding up and she replied, "great! look at her". When I clarified; asking Reggie how she herself was holding up she replied "good, getting attached". Apparently her daughter is as well but Reggie reminded her of "the rules"..... Below are a few shots taken during my visit...
