We had a visit from Gwen and Buddy today, a lovely couple who have had multiple Dobermans over the years. I think I can safely say they are dedicated to the breed! They started their vacation out right by stopping in to visit their pup Yellow! It was love at first sight! Although they appreciated the other pups, they honed in on Yellow, scooped him up and gave him their undivided attention! It was pretty evident they already love this little boy as much as I do! And that warms my heart to the core! The story of Gwen Buddy and Yellow is an interesting one! Gwen contacted me about a pup the day, or possibly the day before, Lex had her pups. They placed #4 on the list for a male and were very excited. I was left to make a call I dreaded to inform them there were too few males to go around. It was evident they wanted a male and only a male and wanted one sooner than later. I referred them to a reputable breeder I know who had a litter coming up.... It was a sad day for me because I had really enjoyed our conversation and wanted one of my pups to have such a wonderful couple to call their own! Today's visit served to confirm and remind me my intuition is solid. And the story goes.... it was meant to be that a course of events brought Gwen and Buddy back to us. After waiting a a few weeks for the upcoming litter, they were once again disappointed to find, there were too few males! I never asked so I'm not sure why they revisited my site, but when they did they discovered an available boy! If you recall, Robin and Kevin who had been on the list for about forever requested to drop due to some medical concerns and mobility issues their current dog Daisy was experiencing. Kevin and Robin were a sweet couple as well and a couple I've had many conversations with but I had to agree with their Vets assessment that adding a pup wouldn't be fair to Daisy.... maybe I'll hear from them again one day when circumstances are different but for now I'm pretty sure we would all agree Yellow was indeed born for Gwen and Buddy! And I was glad to put an end to what was surely an emotional roller coaster for them!
On to the good pups part of this post... They really are good pups! And they experienced the riding mower doing what riding mowers are supposed to do today. I had them in the big dog run and began mowing a good distance away from them. I can't lie, the noise, when I first fired up the Snapper did seem to startle them. They ran as a group to their favorite corner, taking comfort in one another and watched... And I watched them. It wasn't long before they ventured out of their corner and began going their separate ways. I eventually came closer and they continued to watch but didn't seem frightened. Once I finished, I walked by the run a few times and it was pretty obvious they wanted to join me. I'm afraid they may be getting a little spoiled actually. They are quiet and content as long as they don't see me. If I'm within sight and out of reach though, they know how to express their dissatisfaction with the situation. I typically make them wait until they calm because I don't want to reward that behavior. But today I wanted to reward them for demonstrating bravery! I opened the gate and it was a free for all! Eleven happy puppies swarming my feet in 30 seconds flat! We played for a while and I practiced my stingray, or rather Doberman shuffle and then I introduced them to a new route into the house. From the big dog run, we ran through the yard, into the small dog run, through the mud room and straight into their night time habitat in the bedroom. And they did it quickly! Today was the first day they all followed. Normally five or six will. I'll get them settled somewhere safe and have to go back out and retrieve the others! Today they made life easy! lol
Tomorrow is going to be a big day and another day I look forward to. It's bittersweet though... The pups are a lot of fun at this age and I miss them when they go but I so enjoy seeing the smiles they bring to the faces of those who visit and ultimately stake claim! Two pups will be claimed tomorrow.... potentially all will fall into place. My curiosity grows....
