Well, I must say this is somewhat of an embarrassing post to write! This is not my first rodeo and I certainly know how to sex puppies! But...... as I mentioned last night towards the end of Lexi's labor I did a head count and noticed there was a pup that was unaccounted for on my log. I was keeping track of sex and time of birth as they came. I thought! Anyway, once I made the discovery I didn't want to disturb all these newly born pups in order to do a recount of sex. Today was a new day and everyone has settled nicely. Lexi is content and the pups are being pups alternating their time between eating and sleeping. So as promised, I got everyone weighed and marked them with their first colored baby collars. While I did that I double checked sex and to my surprise, I discovered.... and this is the embarrassing part.... a male pup! In my defense I had the lights on low for Lex and those umbilical cords can apparently hide the goods. Embarrassing or not, I was very happy to inform Nick, who has been waiting for awhile now, that in fact Lexi came through for him! I have, in the past, been in the position of waiting for a pup that never came. It's disappointing and knowing how it feels, I hate disappointing others. So the final count, checked and double checked... 11 pups, 8 girls and 3 boys!!!
The pups that are being docked will be docked on Wednesday. Purple, chosen by Kristin and Blue, chosen by Michaela will retain their natural tails.
I had hoped to get the weights posted and maybe a few photos of the pups donning their new gear today but time is running short so I'll aim to get it done tomorrow. I will say, these pups all weighed in very close to each other! The smallest is just under a pound, weighing in at 15 ounces. The largest which just so happens to be a male is 1 pound 4 ounces. We have 5 pups that weigh 1 pound even, 3 pups that weigh 1 pound 2 ounces, one of which is male, and one pup also male that is 1 pound 3 ounces. Lexi did a fabulous job!
