This is SO SUPER IMPORTANT with a Dobie and hope that everyone heeds this advice. We all probably have stories of dogs in our past, either ours or a family or friends dog, weren't well socialized. Once had an adoptee that HATED the vacuum cleaner, ugh. And I encounter on our neighborhood walks everyday dogs that I cross the street to avoid and the interesting thing is their owners aren't very friendly either (a generalization on my part as they usually respond to my greeting with a grunt or shrug). What I love more than anything else is encountering Dobies who could be the poster child for breed embassador!
Great article. Thank you! We have a vet around the corner who has puppy beginner classes. They keep the class really small and the place is very clean. There are also many AKC classes that are just for small puppy socialization.
Hopefully, by the time these pups are ready to go, things will begin to open back up. I had Shine enrolled in class but only got two sessions in before they cancelled. :-(
I like to take my pups to puppy kindergarten. Most but not all have gone. Experience tells me most clubs require shot records before allowing enrollment. So generally a safe place with precautions in place for pups with immature immune systems. I'd be caught a bit off guard if they didn't request shot records prior to the beginning of class. Might choose a different place.
Exactly... I think important for all dogs but I always tell people you can't over socialize a Dobe. You don't want them to become a liability. Teach them that in general all are good and leave it to them to use discretion down the road. It's innately in them.
Read and totally agree. Wendy broke it down perfectly. It's going to be tough if we're still in the same state as we are now but hopefully we'll be able to socialize them properly one way or another
I agree... may be a bit more difficult. But no excuses. Just more imagination
