As some of you've already seen on the litter page, I had the pleasure of meeting Joe and Deborah today giving me the chance to introduce them face to face with their girl Libby! Seems to me Joe and Deborah and Trent and Paula have quite a bit in common. Firstly all great people comprising two wonderful couples. One thing I know without a doubt is both girls, Libby and Jinx are headed to fabulous, loving and caring homes! Meeting the people who my pups will eventually know as family has really become one of my favorite parts of breeding.
I received a couple calls today and I'm happy to report all pups in the litter once again have a home waiting for them. I'd like to welcome Mitch and Holly to our group! Welcome guys- we'll have to get you set up on the FB litter page if you're FB account holders. I'll chat with you about it tomorrow.
While I have no qualms about holding a pup over... for as long as it takes to find a perfect home, it's best for the pups if that home is waiting at the eight week mark. I discovered quite a while back there is a reason the legal age of departure for puppies is set at eight weeks. They truly are ready at that time. They're ready for one on one interaction... more than that I honestly think they need it. The more the better. And those early days, as young as they are, provide great opportunity for learning. I usually give a pup a day to settle in. Day two, I put their mind to work learning some basic commands. I also believe those things that are learned at the youngest of ages become most ingrained. It's simply what experience tells me. And once they figure out what learning is all about, teaching is easy. These are incredibly smart dogs. Most of you, having owned a Doberman in the past are aware. For those of you who have never owned or trained one, all I can say is don't underestimate their brain. With positive reinforcement, ie treats, they can easily be taught to sit on command without a lure in a day. Several short sessions and positive reinforcement when they try is all it takes. The next day teach them to down (lay). The sky truly is the limit once they figure out what learning is all about. They will try. They will seriously try and please you! But you have to invest the time. The end result a direct reflection of the time and energy invested along the way.
Now.... I'm sure each of you are thinking... "enough lecture; where are our pictures"? Well, pictures this week have not come easy. Once again Ive created pups that have the follow me game down pat! And it seems if I sit for any length of time, there chosen spot is to sit right along side me or under the chair I'm sitting in. But I'm getting there. I ran out of daylight today with Red but I'll snap a few of him tomorrow. I think I've got enough of everyone else to compete their pages. Soon...
Today was a DMV run to renew the blasted drivers license for which they now, at least once, want every document ever known to man presented prior to issue. And the line... oh it was a long one! Once home, I got everyone fed and weighed then treated them with their de-wormers. They may correct that if given the option though from "treated" to "medicated". I do doubt I could teach one to sit if wormer was the reward.
