A Really Big Day In The Land Of Pups!

5/31/2018

I know ya'll are anxiously awaiting photos and I'm steadily working to that end. Trust me. It's a time consuming process. Especially the first round.

We lucked out with the weather today! First day we didn't have a day filled with more rain than not in weeks. I guess the powers that be heard my plea!

The pups did great with their first solo outings and I managed to get enough photos of each to open their pages which I'll be working on probably late into the evening. Or night.
They also received a nail trim and new collars. And still left to do tonight are weights and wormers.

The photoshoot was the highlight of my day. It's always fun to see the pups' response to the great outdoors. And today's event was well... eventful. For Blue's outing we were surprised by some gunfire as my neighbor, unaware of what I was doing, engaged his son in some target practice in his back four. Blue hit the deck but recovered quickly and honestly didn't really seem phased by it after the initial shock. I thought it was a little much though so I delayed further work until the loud bangs ceased.

Then during Red's turn we had a rather loud and low flying helicopter which he surprisingly had no reaction to, followed by a light sprinkling of rain. which also seemed to go un-noticed. Generally speaking the pups are slightly uneasy with their first outdoor experience but within a few minutes and with some encouragement become at least a little inquisitive. I love doing the week four photos... lack of quickness and an air of caution speeds things right along. Each week photos become increasingly more difficult. Tomorrow, weather permitting, we'll have our first group outing where their confidence will quickly begin to grow. Today they basically got acquainted. Tomorrow, especially in each others company they'll be ready to check things out in earnest.

While the highlight of the day for me was the photoshoot, I'm pretty sure for the pups it came with their first taste of mash. They dug right in. As a group, they split 2 cups of food saturated with water and cleaned their bowl. Just one feeding today -to let them get accustomed to it. Tomorrow most likely two and from there on out they'll be fed three. I'm sure Majestic will be
relieved to find their hunger diminished.

Sitting and standing... and a little bit of play

These little guys are taking off! Changing daily. Their coordination and stamina increasing quickly. They're walking fairly well now and I'm even seeing an occasional brief jog across their habitat. And playing. This week noses are being gnawed on and pups are batting at and pushing each other over. They're also becoming very responsive to voice. They can all be sound asleep but if I talk to them in an upbeat voice they quickly come to wakefulness and wonder what's next. Mostly they're cuteness is increasing each time I look at them.
Got ahold of Joe and he's claimed the girl mentioned in my last post. Once again all pups have been spoken for and have great homes in store for them.

Now please, whoever's out there doing the rain dance it's time to stop. We've got big plans in a couple days and the rain isn't going to be conducive! One things for sure though...the pups are getting a chance to get used to thunder and lightning. Just part of their norm.

Tying up loose ends...

I'm happy to report our litter is officially registered. When you arrive to claim your pups, each of you will receive an A.K.C. registration application enabling you to register them in your names. To give you something to think about, Official AKC names can consist of any combination of 39 letters and characters including spaces. And I'm hopeful each of you will carry through, register,  and give your dog a proper AKC name regardless of the call name you give them. My dogs all carry part of their registered name as their call name but many don't.

I also sent out invoices for 2nd deposit this evening through PayPal so keep an eye out for those. Alicia, you are an exception as yours was received some time back.

One pup sale has fallen through due to unforeseen events leaving one available female. I've messaged Joe who was originally on Majestic's list for a girl but when too few pups were born he transferred deposit to an upcoming litter. At this point in time I've not heard back from him but will give it a week or so in case he's vacationing before making her officially available.

I hope, despite the rain, you're finding ways to enjoy your holiday weekend. We haven't been hit too hard around this area. As is often the case, we have more severe weather with no-named storms. Today, no worse than it's been for the past week and a half! Hopefully by next week the rain will have run it's course and we'll have some pleasant weather for the first of many outdoor adventures.

I can only assume you're reading this- I wish Weebly would find a way to fix their bug related to blog comments. It appears it may have been working for a while but I've tried multiple times to post "TEST" comment to no avail. If anyone needs to reach me I'm here by phone or email.

Older Brother

Mako- now a two year old doing his thing. A Majestic x  Serious pup who excels in his sport of agility. I'm told his trainer loves him and refers to him as a Gazelle. Normally an A-Frame is designed to allow the dog to run up one side and down the other. Mako though, took it upon himself to bypass the act of running the boards by simply jumping the whole works. Pretty incredible when you factor in height plus distance. Jennifer began getting Mako involved with the basics of Agility when he was about six months old and has had weekly meets since. She say's his agility day is his favorite day of the week. She found his calling and is dedicated to doing what it takes to make him happy. In agility, he's obviously in his element. His happy place.

Getting Back In The Swing...

5/26/2018

So with construction done... at least for now, I've finally got my house fairly well back to normal. Normal with the addition of some improvements. Unfortunately, there are a couple things that are going to require a rework so painting the room is going to have to sit on the back burner pending the revision. I allowed myself 3-4 days for a project while with pups but those days turned into 5+. And now we're entering the phase where Majestic will be taking the backseat to yours truly as far as pup care is concerned. It's hard to believe these pups will be ready for the first of their solid food (mash) and the beginnings of their outdoor adventures in a week! The time for me has flat out flown by!

Majestic, as you can see from the photos, continues to be an excellent mom spending most of her time with her eight pack. Just recently though, I've noticed her laying, even if only briefly, on the ottoman assessing things from a distance. But she never ventures far. Always maintaining awareness of what's going on with her pups.

The pups themselves are right on track with their milestones. They're getting around pretty well -walking but without much coordination. They're also becoming much more vocal and the past couple days I've noticed the beginnings of some play activity.

Pup Selections... and dates

5/23/2018

I made a couple calls this evening before I proceeded to reply to each of your questions and or preference of dates for pups selection. Unfortunately when I hit submit to post my reply I kept receiving an error message. Wondering if you are experiencing the same problem on your end? Might be a glitch with Weebly that will straighten itself out in a day or two. If it's longer than that I'll follow up and find out what's going on with blog comments.

For now I'll bypass the comment section and give you a rundown on who's coming and when. Alicia and her hubby will be here on the 15th to select their boy. Since I couldn't respond directly to your question Alicia, I can be available pretty much any time, but morning after 10:30 - 11:00 or early afternoon is probably best.  I'll put you guys down for the 15th.

Lisa will be here on the 16th around 11am to noon depending on traffic. And Jackie, to answer your question, -later on the afternoon on 16th or pretty much anytime after 11 on the 17th is fine for you and Scott. And Michelle, the 18th, as long as everyone sticks to the schedule as outlined will work for you.

Normally as the time nears, still three weeks away, I start calling everyone to schedule but arranging the dates here and now works too. Maybe better in the long run. It will save me valuable time and thought down the road. But if things change for anyone between now and then, please let me know as soon as possible so we don't have a snowball effect that requires everyone to juggle their schedule at the last moment. I'll
likely still make my calls just to confirm but looks like we've got a good jump on things!

Pups and Construction...

5/23/2018

Good afternoon Pup Pals... It's all in a days work!

Looks like some of you -most probably all are jones'n for a fresh set of pup pics. I assure you all pups are thriving under Majestic's watchful eye. And a couple days later than expected the construction crew has packed their tools and returned home. The project near it's completion leaving just some clean up and a little painting left to do. So basically, things are back to normal as there's always something to do around here. I'm sure that's the case for most of you too.

When I have a litter, I time things according to the developmental stages of my pups. My goal is to get everything caught up and in order while Mom is the main care taker. I, the master bedding changer and cuddler. In the early weeks I try and spend some time in the whelping box with the pups each day and of course they're handled regularly during bedding changes, weights and de-wormings and soon nail trims.  In a couple weeks and going forward the pups will pretty much consume my life between feedings, photos, outings, updates and eventually visits and selections. Right now I'm taking advantage of the fact that they are less demanding of my time and attention.

But they're making great strides. They're walking if only minimally and are fairly eager to climb on my lap given the chance. They're barking...  sometimes at me when I enter the room, sometimes at each other and sometimes it seems at nothing in particular. Just finding their voices. Tomorrow I'll obtain another set of weights but visually it appears each is gaining well and appropriately. Jess is still spending a great deal of time with them. I snapped a few photos before turning in for the night last night and will post those. Mainly as proof all is well. As Ellie said in comment, I think I've got my pup
pals spoiled.  :-)  Especially those of you who've had a chance to watch previous litters come up. If you think I'm slacking, trust me,  there will be photos. Many many photos going forward. Old habits die hard. Some never do. The bond I develop with my pups and rapport I build with their parents I suspect will be of the latter.

Looks like some are jumping the gun as far as dates go for selection. I don't usually tend to plan so far in advance other than generalities but the dates mentioned in the comments associated with my last post have been noted and I think can be honored. Will try and reach Lisa this evening, solidify and keep the ball rolling. Setting times for people to come choose their pup isn't normally too difficult... at least that's been my experience in the past. But an early start on scheduling is fine by me.

2 Weeks and Counting ---->

5/17/2018

Wow two weeks already!

The pups spent their two week birthday safe and sound in the security of their whelping box with mom while maybe noticing- or not- some new sensations. A bit of construction involving a complete makeover of  the multipurpose mudroom, pup room, and laundry room is underway! While things haven't been terribly loud, timing of the project related to the stage of pup development was taken into consideration. At this point they're just on the cusp of developing the ability to hear. Majestic is use to the sounds of hammers hitting nails and saws ripping through boards so remains unfazed as she cares for her pups behind closed doors of the neighboring room. The makeover is designed with ease of use and ease of cleaning in mind and will remove the unsightly's from view.

Week two weights were obtained this evening and once again I'm happy with the gains achieved. Most gained over a pound during the course of the past week and those who fell short came close. Pink remains our smallest pup but carries a respectable weight. And Green has taken the lead weighing in at just over 3 pounds.

Tomorrow morning to afternoon we'll take a quick break from the project at hand and try to snap a few pics of the babies.  And soon, some pics of the room near completion just in time to accept it's first litter. I'm excited as I watch the transformations before me- both of pup and space!

Random photos... And thoughts.

So Majestic celebrates mothers day with her pack of pups while I continue to work on dog runs and such for my pack of dogs. Still working on creating individual runs in the event they have to be left unattended in them. Smaller but safe= that's what we're going for. And the ability for them to run the property once again if only in pairs. We're getting there. I'm still having difficulty accepting the fact they can't all just get along. It's heartbreaking to me. But they're family and family stick together. We do what's necessary and best for the family unit.

I don't have kids of the two legged variety. But the dogs- they are my kids. Each, like all kids with their own unique personalities. Majestic has been such an incredible mom and I can honestly say each of you waiting for one of her pups is in for a treat. Between her and I doing what we do, she's got some gorgeous and very much loved progeny out there. And I expect this litter to be no different. I'm saddened that timing is such it prevents me from keeping one of her offspring as my own. Had always thought I would... had always wanted to but I really need to regain stability within the pack before adding additional Dobermans whether they be of my own breeding or others. Even so, I get enjoyment knowing they will, like others before them, bring great joy to their people. But it must be remembered they're babies. Babies with great potential! As pups, there will be trials and challenges of course but in the end, if you do your part, Dobermans truly are the best companions you can ask for. I always say the end result is directly related to the time and attention invested along the way. Invest in them... and they will bring you happiness beyond measure. Many of you know this... you've experience the breed in the past or are current guardians. For those of you new to the breed all I can say is don't waste their incredible intelligence. Use and exercise their brain! These dogs truly can do it all. They've got what it takes. You just need to ask and provide the direction. Each of you were selected to be care takers of these pups based on my belief, through conversation, that you have what it takes to meet their needs. Once their needs are met, the sky is the limit. They truly do aim to please!
While waiting for your pups, reading posts and viewing photos, I'd love to hear
you've also researched the breed. Read... watch some training videos and gear up. Be prepared. Be prepared to have some fun but make it fun with a purpose.
Your Pups... With a shine that only a great mom can bring!
Tails and dew claws are looking good- healing well!
And yellow collared boy has the beginnings of an opening eye!

Happy Mothers Day!

It's getting late in the day and yes... I do have a few photos to post- which is what I know each of you most want to see- but I didn't want the day to pass without wishing the moms out there a happy Mothers Day! And for the dads... no worries when your special day comes we'll be here to celebrate yours with you too! Then I guess by the time the nationally recognized "Parents Day" rolls around each of you will have your new little bouncing bundle of fur-child with you in your very own home sweet home! The time it is a ticking!

These little guys and gals are progressing well. I'm hearing a bark on occasion but still mostly just moans and squeaks. Their soft voices always do a good job of lulling me to sleep.
Black boy looked like he might try and climb out of the basket I put them in but got half way there and either thought better of it or ran out of steam. Not sure which. Which ever- he fell asleep half in and half out. The stage of sleep eat and repeat.... Eyes should be opening soon! Maybe in the next couple days.

Weights and Crops...

5/10/2018

Weights have been posted- all with good gains. I generally compare one litter to the next and this litter is in the ball park of others. Maybe a tad smaller gains overall as compared to a few but maybe to be expected due to the slight rocky start. Not concerned... pups are thriving.
Ear cropping appointments have been secured. One on our list has chosen their own cropper. The remainder will be done by Dr McBride. Four pups will go in June 28th and three on July 3rd. That calls for some independence day pick ups and we'll talk about which pups go in on which days when the time nears. Holidays can be a little tough for some, great for some and not a big deal one way or the other for others. For me, most holidays are just like any other day. For the 4th I generally stick close to home to make sure the critters- dogs and horses aren't bothered by what ever fireworks are going off in the distance.

Well, I must say, it feels really good to have things back to a good degree of normalcy around here. As you can see Jess and her pup are pretty content in their space. The pups are doing great... growing and doing a good job maneuvering around the whelping box in scoot fashion.
Monday marked a milestone with their first, beyond that of their birth, Vet visit. Tails and dewclaws are done!
Late tomorrow, at a week of age I'll once again obtain their weights. I expect no surprises though as each, from a visual perspective, appears to be keeping up with the next.
I've had a few inquiries about pup selections, vaccines and general puppy care. Most question each of you may have will likely be covered here during the course of the next several weeks but if you have questions please don't hesitate to ask via comments attached to my posts. I do read and appreciate them. Generally speaking if you have a question it's likely others may share the same questions.
Puppy selections begin around six weeks and are scheduled according to the order seen on the reservation list. When we get closer to the six week mark I'll be calling each of you to schedule times convenient for you. It is important that everyone takes a look at the list, and considering it, makes themselves available at some point during that week and the following 7th week. This will be especially important for the boys as there are 6 people who need to visit within that two week period.  I prefer an onsite visit but there are times based most often on location when selections have been made over the phone.  Most often, weather permitting I bring the pack of pups out, throw a blanket on the lawn and let them romp and interact. It's not
unusual for people to spend a couple hours here in an attempt to make their decision. Often not easy.
As far as vaccines go, they'll receive the first of a series sometime around their 6th to 7th week birthday. From there the recommended schedule is every 3rd week until they're 4 months of age at which time they will
receive their rabies vaccination. The first booster generally coincides well with the removal of headgear applied during crop and their first tape and post.  Regarding early and immature immunity I don't allow unknown dogs on my property.

The Calendar Didn't Tell Me...

But My Dog Did!
Picture
The morning of May 3rd, I found it a little odd that Jess didn't eat her food when first placed in front of her. Her intake the past few weeks, as expected, increased and immediate. Her appetite great! A bit later in the morning I noticed her pawing a blanket on the lounge she'd been laying on. That action had me running to the calendar where I realized the reason behind my miscount.

I have never before set up a whelping station as quickly as I did that day!

Fortunately, Majestic a seasoned mom, took to her box right away. The first of her contractions came around 3pm.  I turned on some tunes as I always do- watched and waited. As we were approaching the two hour mark that's her norm I began to become a little concerned. Call it a feeling... call it those voices. She wasn't exhibiting any signs of distress...  but something had me setting up a box for the possibility of pups arriving during transport. I double checked the back-seat seat protector and placed it in it's designed sling position. Upon my return to Jess I found no change. But... I thought her contractions seemed a little weak. Better safe than sorry I called UF Gainesville to discuss her course. They informed me they generally recommend 2-3 hours of active contractions before recommending a trip in. This is what I've known to be customary... my local vet pushing the envelope a little to 4 hours. I made the decision at two and a half to take Majestic in. On exam they agreed, her contractions probably too weak to bring pup. We discussed a trial of Oxytocin and had consult with the surgeon. Jess was given the dose of Oxy which did increase the strength of her contractions but only temporarily. After lab work, ultrasound and X-rays were complete and reviewed it was decided a C-section would be performed. Majestic's and my first. And uneasy I was. Surgery always comes with risks and I've read and have knowledge of too many occurrences, even during scheduled C-sections, that loss of pups is somewhat common. While I could feel her pups kicking within I was preparing myself for loss of half the litter. My thoughts, even knowing she was in good hands with state of the art equipment available, were with Jess. I was told the section itself is a quick process... the time of anesthesia to the time pups are out only about ten minutes. From there they work on mom, checking and closing. They would come out and talk to me after mom and pups were stable. They expected my wait to be about an hour and a half.  That wait seemed an eternity.

Fortunately around 10:30 my wait was rewarded with the absolutely best possible news! Jess and all pups were doing well. The Doctor answered the questions I had about nursing after a C-section and gave me the needed post op instructions. Jess had lost quite a bit of blood and would be groggy and maybe a little weak but nursing wouldn't be a problem. They assured me they would get the pups nursing as quickly as possible in order for them to get full effect of the earliest milk and the beneficial colostrum it holds. All was well in the world and in the land of pups! I was relieved and one happy girl!

But the wait continued. I was told by the surgeon Jess and the pups would be transferred to medical... her part of the job complete. I could expect to pick them up around one am. One am came and went but finally around 2:30 I was presented with Jess who was very obviously happy to see me. Along with her came a box full of squirming babies. Official date of birth May 3rd 2018.

I finally got everyone home and settled around 3:30 and kept them under a watchful eye. Jess was in fact groggy and at one point I was a little worried about her. I rousted her up and took her outside which brought forth some pep. From there I rested a little more easily. With each outing the spring in her step has increased and her color is improving. She was alarmingly pale. The pups are nursing well and Jess now tending to them as I've known her to with past litters. Yesterday was pretty much a wash... I hung out in the room with them, exhausted... dozing off and on for brief intervals.

Today I'm happy to report things are basically back to a normal with a caring, attentive and gentle mom caring for a beautiful litter of black and rust pups. I've had a chance to get some rest with a full nights sleep and finally completed the task of speaking to each on Jess's wait list. From
 here we will progress.

Unfortunately we were a couple pups short to complete those most recently added to our list but there will be other pups and other litters. I was pleasantly surprised to hear both families want to wait... proud to hear waiting for one of my pups worth it to them.

My apologies for the late announcement and post. Here's your first glimpse of your babies!

I Love My Personalized Calendars. But....

Let me explain....   I really do know what I'm doing and can in fact count to nine. Nine weeks from mating to due date. Well....  as you read in the previous post it seems I was thrown for a loop by my calendar. I'm posting in hopes of gaining some understanding and to win your confidence back if my abilities were brought into question by anyone. When attempting to schedule build and installation of some half doors in the house, I drug out my trusty calendar to assure I had a few days leeway of whelp day. I was shocked when it became apparent my original date of the 6th was inaccurate. So shocked that I counted twice. On second count I came to the realization Jess wasn't due on the 6th but one week later on the 13th. I corrected the website accordingly and proceeded to live my life. Then came the surprise. A surprise I was happy to be home to accept.  Regarding the due date... seems when reading the above calendar I missed the beautiful bouquet of flowers in the top left hand corner as being a date! And yes, this story will continue. More on the litter...  6 boys and 2 girls to come.
