Today after breakfast I set up their new indoor habitat and officially graduated them from the whelping box. Their new abode is complete with shavings for potty area, a water station and sling bed. This evening there were a couple big potty's ON the bed but considering it was their first day that's not too bad. Fortunately the canvas is washable and within a day or two the pups should figure things out. Today each received their first bath too. Well sort of a bath. More like a shower without soap. Just a thorough rinsing in the sink. Originally it seemed a bit of a shock to the system... the noise and sensation. But they were all very quick to settle and actually seemed to enjoy the luke warm water. They seem too to be developing some trust in me. If they're unsure i provide support and whatever it is I'm asking of them they try to conform. I try to avoid being in a hurry when I'm dealing with my pups and generally give them time to figure things out. The photo above was taken when I asked them to come forward for dinner as a group. That's the funny thing about pups of this age... everything new is suspect. In the whelping box, if I ask them to come forward they came quickly as a group standing against the wall with their front feet over the top. In a new set up they are reluctant to come. Two I retrieved for fear the others would eat all the grub while they were still hanging back. Those two, Green and Black. None actually jumped out of the corral. I'd lift them over when they came close and carry them to their mash. Today. Maybe tomorrow they'll be ready to jump out. They're smart little buggers. It was obvious this evening they recognized the sound of the blender. Hearing it, they got pretty vocal. They knew what was in store for them and wanted to get at it... but their confidence was in the newly familiar. Their sling bed with each other. As it turned out much of the mash was gone by the time Green and Black got up to the plate. I quickly remedied that problem though by whipping up another smaller batch. They're up to eating four cups split between them each meal and this evening got an extra cup. And they're cleaning their bowl each time so I'll continue to increase until they leave a little behind. Black ventured off after a little play and helped himself to the goods contained in moms bowl. He didn't stay there long but seemed to know exactly what to do with his find.
It's hard to believe crops will be complete four weeks from today. The time has really flown by.
