The pups from this litter seem to be trickling out the door. Generally speaking up until my last litter pups have gone home the day after cropping. It's best -not so much for me but for the pups that they get out the door quickly considering they've just undergone surgery and are donning surgical wear. Tapes, posts, sutures and fresh ear margins. Not sure why the delay in pick up as of late but beginning with my next litter I'm going to begin charging board fees for each pup I keep outside the 1st post op day. And trust me, it has nothing to do with my desire to grab money but everything to do with incentive and the pups welfare. I don't want delayed pickups to become the norm. I generally choose families for my pups that have relatively open schedules for a reason. Time for pups. And my cropping appointments are made well in advance. I understand an occasional scheduling glitch but again... it can't become the norm.
The first night post crop I'm pretty successful keeping them quiet... but days together take their toll not only on the surgical bandaging but on the pups themselves. And me. I hate to hear them squeal because a littermate banged into them or at worst decided a freshly cut ear was a great place to chew. They're my babes and I care for them best I can but outside of isolating them from one another some damage to ear postings etc is inevitable. So far the posts and bandages have held up pretty well. Only had to do a repair on one. Thank you Caroleen for your assistance on that one!

So... now that I've got the nasties out of the way from my generally happy posts I'm going to go back to the happy!  I've gotten updates from all but one who have begun their journeys at this point and sounds like everyone's settling in well.  Working their magic on their people.

As for me I'm recovered from the long day of cropping and have continued to have fun with the pups. Most have had their post crop photo shoots done. Basically timing that according to their departure time and will post them after I've got them all done. My norm.

As you know Georgia was a new experience for me... but not an unpleasant one. Long... but not unpleasant. The drive was easy and fortunately no accidents or delays en route. I saw plenty of what Georgia is known for. Cotton. Cotton on the dried plants in fields, cotton blowing in the road and huge bales -of cotton! I guess it's cotton season!!! The worst part of the day came with a strike out on my planned breakfast spot... it was a bit of a bomb. Think it may have been good had I actually gotten what I thought I'd ordered. A glitch in communication I think. But a late lunch more than made up for it. I highly recommend Empanadas And More for a light meal when ever traveling in or even around Valdosta. I had an empanada and sweet plantains and both were incredible. The place will definitely get repeat visits from me! Between breakfast and a late lunch I worked my way around the various thrift shops and boutiques. And I'm proud of myself... I came home nearly empty handed. Interesting places and things to look at but not much I couldn't live without.

As far as the cropping appointment went I'm happy to report I left happy. Really liked the Vet and his staff. And I'm extremely impressed with the finish of the ear margins of the crops. His closure is amazing actually. The sutures are nearly invisible, margins rolled and essentially no oozing or scabbing. There's no ear care needed or recommended while the margins are healing other than to keep clean and dry. The bells of the ear aren't quite what I got from my prior Vet, Dr McBride, but overall I'm happy with the crops and look forward to seeing the pups in all their glory as they heal. We may have some fine tuning going forward... or not. One of my own dogs was done by the same Vet and I'm quite happy with his look. I expect the same in yours. A bit different from what I'm used to but none the less good.

I got the litter specific FB page set up today and will invite each of you to join at some point tomorrow. You'll receive invite via e-mail. The page is set as "private" so the posts you'll see will only be those made by litter-mate owners... And likewise, the posts you create will only be seen by other litter mate owners. I'm really hoping all will choose to join but that decision is up to each of you to make.

Another Winning Day!

Winning but long! About 16 hours worth of long from start to finish.  I'm happy to report we're home and settled. No place like home as they say...  The pups are full of energy. Picked them up in that shape actually. I on the other hand am exhausted but wanted to at least set everyone minds at ease. Each freshly cropped and with an official clean bill of health. They seemed very happy to be home and excited to see their familiar little habitat. Famished I think  but that was remedied quickly. GN

Round One... A Success!!!

Happy to report the three pups, Bambi, Purple and Teslo sailed through their appointments this morning and received their health certificates with compliments. I assume after a long drive home for all involved, everyone is beginning to settle into their new abodes.  And I'm gearing up for round two. The crate is set up and prepared in the back seat for the final six, the car serviced today and I've got my days adventure somewhat planned out. Seems Valdosta is somewhat known for an abundance of huge thrift shops if nothing else. And thanks to trip advisor and skimming over some reviews I've got my breakfast and lunch spots staked out.

Going to be an early morning tomorrow so I'm calling it a night and hoping sleep comes quick. Will post an update tomorrow night once home and settled. I anticipate it will be pretty late though...

A Day In The Life....

11/10/2019

One of many fun days with pups! This from a few days back... This particular day I decided to introduce Shine to the litter. They've seen plenty of each other actually but always with a fence between them. As a group in the open all went swimmingly. Especially when Shine introduced them to our "water feature"... the trough! It serves as an always available source of drinking water, and for some a dipping spot. Getka, Duke and Fancy specifically love to get their feet wet! Sometimes a bit more. Seems a couple of the pups were inclined to take advantage of a quick foot soak and wallow too. Shine sat back and watched as if saying, "well, you're not actually supposed to get in it"!  Never has been her thing. All in all the encounter was a great one. The young leading the way for the younger. And each pup given the opportunity to explore on their own terms.

I've had a lot of fun with this litter as I have with all pups who preceded them. Each similar but also uniquely individual.

Tomorrow we have a big day planned! Bambi, No Name Purple and Teslo have appointments scheduled to obtain their health certificates. Assuming all goes as planned, each will begin their journeys with their new families. Always a bitter sweet time for me. I get pretty attached to each of those unique little personalities but also love to hear and see the joy they bring to the hearts and souls of others.

Today I spent a little time trying to capture week eight photos of those scheduled to depart tomorrow. As for the others, I'll wait until after their crops are complete and catch them in all their glory.

No Time Like The Present...

A little late on the update but I think it's safe to say a pleasant weekend was had by all! Pups and I included.
And by end of day Saturday selections were complete!

Puppy selections have always been and continue to be one of the most fun aspects of being a breeder for me. As I always say, it's great to have smiling faces coming my way! I don't think there has ever been a time when anyone left here less than truly happy. This time seemed no exception. That includes those last on the list for both male and female. Both were obviously pleased when I called to inform them which pup they could officially claim as their own. Kat, I knew has had her eye on Pink from the very early days. I'm not sure about Marnie but she tells me her husband had his heart somewhat set on the Grey pup. All in all selections went very well and everyone, including the pups enjoyed the cooler temps the weekend delivered.

Yesterday I managed to get a fresh set of pictures of most of the pups and finished them up today. And as usual, what's left is to get them posted. Surprisingly it was Purple this week who gave me some trouble with pics and even more surprising Pink was exceptionally and unusually cooperative when it came to doing her part. I'll get to posting pics tomorrow afternoon after a quick run to town for supplies which are once again running toward empty.

Holy Cow!

Winter is upon us! For those of you coming tomorrow I'd advise against wearing the standard South Florida attire of T-shirt and shorts. It's Hoodie Weather!!! Looks like it's likely to be 60-65 degrees here throughout the day! I generally show the pups in all their rambunctiousness outside as long as not to cold and/or raining. Fed them their breakfast on the deck this morning and they tolerated the drastic change in temps without so much as batting an eye. Actually seemed to enjoy the nice brisk fall weather. I brought them back in before they began to wind down as that's when the chill begins to set into their bones. Typical Dobermans.

Extras... and "Stuff"

10/30/2019

So, I didn't get the extras posted yesterday as I'd hoped. But today. Well, today, I finally did. Late as it is.

Yesterday ended up being another long dog day! For the most part centering around my own.

I was lucky enough to be able to participate in a clinical trial at UF with Majestic and Ritz and get some free testing done at the same time! This particular trial, which I signed up for several months back, is studying a correlation between diet, specifically grain free diet, and DCM. Included in the study are Dobermans, Golden Retrievers and Schnauzers.  I assume most of you have heard about the recent FDA reports regarding potentially harmful effects of feeding grain free. I for one, after reading the report was overjoyed I'd never jumped on that bandwagon. And I don't recommend feeding grain free. While it's known Dobermans are genetically prone to the disease there has been an uptick of DCM in some breeds that historically are not. There have already been a few studies documenting correlation. The one I'm most familiar with was Golden Retriever specific. But it serves to reason, if those foods weren't good for Goldens, they probably aren't good for any breeds.

But, apparently the jury's still out. Or at the very least they feel there are enough unknowns to warrant additional investigation. Despite the long day I was happy to participate and the highlight came when I had a chance to speak with the cardiologist and receive my preliminary reports. Both Ritz and Majestic continue to have strong healthy hearts and normal echocardiograms. Blood was drawn as well for taurine levels BNP and genetic markers but those will be sent out and not available for some time.

www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/news/uc-davis-investigates-link-between-dog-diets-and-deadly-heart-disease

All in all it was a good day. While waiting for my dogs I had a chance to chat with one of my pup pals who had his girl, Libby, there for the same study. The conversation definitely helped pass the time and it was great to see Joe and one of my pups in the flesh. Have seen quite a few photos of her but it's just not quite the same as the real deal.
I wrapped up the day tending to the pups first-  then moved on to my own who were happy to see me and eager to eat.

Then we opened the Chewy box! We have a tendency to move through toys pretty rapidly so when I buy I usually buy in bulk. The kids like their Hol-ee Rollers and I ike the JW products. I find most to be pretty Doberman worthy!

Moving Right Along!

I'm happy to report I FINALLY got all the pup pages updated for a the week! My Mac is uploading slower than molasses!! And that's no joke! Doubt it's the computer actually... more than likely the supposedly, high speed connection I have here. I think high speed in the sticks falls into a slightly different category than high speed in the big city. I managed to get quite a few good pics of the pups on their individual outings and will try and post a few of the extras tomorrow.

Getting decent photos of them though, as expected, is getting harder and harder. They're getting amazingly quick... or I'm getting slower. Probably a combination of the two. Once again the tracking award for the week goes out to Pink. She's a tough one to sneak away from.

They're all getting super sweet! Cuddly and so far no biting to speak of which is awesome!!! They're also gaining quite a bit more confidence. Nearly no howling this week if/when they lost track of me. Just an obvious determination in their quest to find me. They're getting pretty good at it and always get loads of praise for a job well done when they succeed! Even if they found me before I really wanted them to. lol

Got a message from Shon today to let me know which boy they've decided to claim as their own. Seems Melissa won the battle and Mr Orange, now Butler, will be joining their family.

Things really begin to happen this weekend! We've got visits scheduled with Jace,
Jennifer, Esmeralda and Caroleen!  Should make for a fun Saturday!
