I must say it's nice to have my work week behind me. I'm looking forward to my time off and to what the week will bring. Majestic is holding up well. Still sleeping on the bed and showing little to no interest in the whelping pool. She did check it out for the first time this morning however. She gave the top blanket a cursory dig before laying down; got up, turned a few circles and gave things another dig before laying back down. She looked pretty content with things and stayed there until I got up. Then as usual, she was right behind me. It is as they say with Dobermans, when you have one, your days of even going to the bathroom alone are over. Jess has become slightly clingy but I'm optimistic that she'll use the whelping pool rather than beginning the process of having her pups on my bed. That's what this week will be all about. Preparing Majestic for motherhood.
I've heard it said that where women are concerned, the sex of a baby can be determined by how the baby is carried during pregnancy... boys are carried low and girls high. But what about dogs and pups. To look at Majestic today, approximately a week from her due date, it isn't all that evident that she's pregnant when looking at her from the front or from above. But looking at her from the side, now that's a whole different story. Her trim little waist a thing of the past... yes, she's definitely carrying! And glowing.... Another task complete! Yay, the whelping room is officially ready for what's to come. Whelping kit; check! Whelping pool; check! A couple sets of clean bedding; check! Identification collars and notebook; check, check! Camera with extra batteries; check! Emergency numbers close at hand; check!..... hopefully I wont need those. Removal of my own still decent bedding, replaced with that which has always been damaged; check! Learned a hard lesson on that one already! Next week will bring some last minute preparations. Still have to stock up on snacks! Snacks for my girl and snacks for me! Experience has taught me you can never have too many snacks when it comes to whelpin' pups.... it can be a long process! There is no such thing as being over prepared! But I'm ready! Getting excited... but as always, a little nervous! Majestic has shown me absolutely no evidence that she has a clue as to what's about to happen. At least she was willing to get in the whelping pool for a quick photo. That's a good start. Will be keeping a close eye on her as her time draws near and hopefully I'll see some nesting behavior kick in in the next few days! My fingers are crossed that Lex has been having some secret girl to girl chats with her and things will come as natural to Majestic as they always have to Lexi. With Majestic ready to deliver her precious pups in just over a week, the time has come to get prepared! Once again, I'll be setting up the whelping area within my bedroom. Doing so allows me to keep a close eye on everyone with the general comforts of home within reach. It also provides a quiet and controlled atmosphere for pups and dam, separating them from the rest of the critters that call the house home. While Majestic came from a large litter, I think she's going to get somewhat of a break with her first shot at motherhood. Her condition, while obvious, is not as pronounced as was Lexi and her previous litters. Time will tell though, what Majestic's hiding within.
