What a difference a few days makes.  The pups are building muscle and are becoming pretty active within the confines of their whelping pool.  I've noticed the first few attempts at play and full fledged barking from a couple of them. And I'm not talking little puppy barks....  I'm talking some surprisingly serious barks. They continue to work on their walking skills and are slowly gaining some coordination. They'll  sit briefly and just look around intrigued I'm sure by their newly acquired sight.  For the most part though, they continue to sleep when they aren't busy feasting.  Majestic is just beginning to lengthen her time away from them but only slightly.  Even so, when she's not paws on, she's generally got an eye one them. She's an awesome, obviously concerned an protective mom! I'm looking forward to the next couple weeks and I'm gearing up to assume the role of primary caregiver...  a role Jess seems reluctant to give up.  That, I assume will soon change!

Two Weeks Old!

Two short weeks...  incredible changes!  And it's good to have my work week behind me.  Three days ago I was just beginning to see some eyes trying to open. Today, the pups eyes are fully or at least near fully open. And increased awareness is obvious.
As far as their mobility goes, they're doing a pretty good job of sitting, at least for brief periods and some are taking their first few real steps followed by a roll or a face plant.  They're putting forth good effort but not quite there yet.

They're getting more vocal too as they discover their bark and some sweet little growls. Their growl however sounds a bit more like a cat's loud purr. They're adorable! And growing.

I finally got around to weighing everybody tonight and I'm happy with their gains. Each pup gained just over a pound and some came close to a pound and a half. With the exception of one! Maroon Girl gained the most and has actually surpassed the boys with her gain of 1 pound 11 ounces! It's doubtful she'll maintain the status of the largest pup @ 8 weeks of age but for now she carries her title with pride.

Tomorrow the pups will receive the first of a series of wormers and their first taste of something other than mom's milk. We'll see some significant changes occur in the next couple weeks and their experiences, like their bodies, will continue to grow.  New collars, nail trims, mash and the first of their outdoor adventures. They're about to become fun! Work, but none the less fun!

I took a moment for myself today; some R&R and a much needed trail ride with some new found friends...a great way to leave the work week behind and set myself up for a wonderful week ahead. I figured I better take the opportunity now as Majestic will soon be handing the bulk of her work load over to me.  It's time once again to gear up!

Glad to see the rain dissipate!  I know we need it sometimes, and to some degree I enjoy it, but at the same time I'm always glad to see it go. At some point today I'll be mopping up my beloved pawprints and have clean floors once again until the next rains come.  I do appreciate Dobes for the small footprints they leave as opposed to Affie prints which are actually more like mop prints.

I took the time today and yesterday to tie up some paperwork and loose ends. Litter Registration is complete and A.K.C. Packets are on the way. Yesterday I scheduled the pups for their Ear Crops. The plan at this point in time is for 3 to be done on April 2nd and 6 on April 7th. I had a bit of a scare when I called because I was originally told Dr McBride would be out of the office for the week. There was a slight hesitation and then we settled on the requested dates. I plan to call in the morning and confirm and if possible I'll be reversing the number of pups on each date.  I'll post if things change. In any event, as things stand, some of the pups will be ready to venture off with their new families April 6th after an office visit to obtain their Health Certificates and the others will be ready April 8th.  Hope these dates help with your planning. Now is the time to be gathering supplies...  crates if you plan to use them, kid gates which I've always found handy and of course a selection toys and appropriate things to chew.  It's always easier... and cheaper to prepare than it is to have to go out and get puppy things at the last minute.

I'll try and snap a few more photos this evening and in the morning and get them posted. And I'll obtain another set of weights tomorrow evening before my work schedule comes calling once again.

Growing Like Weeds!

Just Checking in....  All is well is the land of pups!  Majestic is doing a fabulous job!!!!  I can tell though that she's missing mommy time and has developed a ritual of jumping up on the bed for a snuggle each night before retiring for the rest of the night with her pups. She definitely hasn't lost any of her sweet disposition. As far as the youngsters are concerned, I got everyone weighed Saturday night after work and I'll have to say I'm very happy with the results. Everyone gained about the same; an impressive 6-8 ounces in 4 days.  Black remains our heavyweight and I'm guessing he's going to maintain his status throughout his stay with me.  I just have a feeling he's going to be a big pup and dog! We shall see. None of the pups have claimed the title yet of lightweight but I expect that to change by the time the pups are weighed again... and I expect more than one pup will own that title at various points in time. Again we shall see.

In other news Remedy graduated Puppy Kindergarten this morning and earned her Star Puppy Certificate. As much as I'd like to continue straight on with the next session, I think I'll let one pass and join up for the next. The club is a bit of a drive and time is about to become a very precious commodity.  We'll continue to work at home when time allows and be that much more prepared when we finally get there. Next step....  CGC.

Good Morning From The Land Of Pups!

While there isn't much new to report, that's sometimes a good thing. Jess and her litter are doing fabulous.
The pups are nursing with determination and seem quite agile for their age.  They're beginning to plump up ever so slightly... and Yellow girl already climbed up moms side to rest on her back supported by the pool wall. The others are rapidly gaining strength and some control of their back legs.  Not bad since I didn't really expect their arrival until today or maybe even sometime through Saturday!  I was surprised by their 1st weights as well.  I expected them to be lighter since Jess carried them only to the very low end of a normal gestation period.  I guess she knew what she was doing....  I took a few minutes while enjoying my morning coffee to check tails, snap some photos, and cuddle some pups.  Our sutures are holding...  and while I can't share the snuggles...  I will share some of the photos.

The Deed Is Done.....

While I never look forward to it, it does seem I'm finding my appointments for docks and dew claws less emotionally or psychologically traumatic with each passing litter. With that said, the pups enjoyed their first car ride today and returned home slightly lighter than they were when we ventured out.  They took the procedure like the Dobermans they are though and actually seemed more upset with being held tightly than with the procedure itself. Or maybe they were equally upset with both.  In any event as soon as they were turned free, they were quick to quiet and settle.  It was immediate in fact. Majestic again was a trooper but did show a little worry when I placed the second group of pups in the box for my return trip to the Vet.  Even so, she was quiet and content with the stay at homes when I returned with her outlings. It's nice to have this day behind us...  looking forward to the days of play!

The Dust Is Settling!

Well, it's been a whirlwind of a couple days.  I thought I was ready!  And actually I was with the exception of tying up a few loose ends; namely my snacks! But Majestic surprised me. By about 4 days. So we delivered pups! On Coffee alone!
The first noticeable contraction came @ 3:40 and Majestic wasted no time.
Black Male who you may see originally sporting a yellow collar made his debut @ 5PM.
Majestic experienced a near perfect and textbook delivery. However, while I thought she was done with the arrival of Maroon Girl @ 8:50 PM, Majestic had another surprise for me. Orange Female made her entrance @ 9AM Tuesday morning.  Again, an uneventful delivery following a quiet night.  All pups came easily and without assistance and Majestic is proving to be an exemplary mother. She's careful and she's attentive but most of all she's loving toward her babes! While Lexi has always been a fabulous mom, she lacks some of the gentleness I'm seeing in Majestic.  It's touching to watch her gently lay her head on a whimpering pup in an effort to quiet them. And she's calm. She watched with interest while I removed each pup to obtain it's weight last night, And as she watched, her  trust and lack of  worry was evident.  I must say, I'm impressed by and very proud of my girl!
