— feeling relieved.
With that said, vacation or not, there's lots to be done. Having just sent a wonderful group of pups off to live with some equally wonderful families, it seems it's time once again to prepare to welcome new life!
Ready or not, Lexi's due to whelp a week from today. Historically, she sticks to her schedule like clockwork, carrying her pups the full 63 days. Something tells me she might show us what she's got a little sooner than that this time though. In preparation I wasted no time last week. The pup corral has been dismantled and replaced with the whelping pool. So far, Lex has shown no interest in it and I wouldn't really expect her to. She doesn't seem to make a big deal about nesting, so when she starts to demonstrate any such behavior I've learned to expect pups within a day or two. The first change I typically notice from her is a decrease in appetite which in fact occurred today. If memory serves, her appetite usually escapes her a few days prior to the arrival of pups. Time will tell, but she warrants a close eye from this day forward. I hope those of you waiting for pups will keep an eye on the blog and follow along to watch the pups as they grow and reach their milestones. I will, as always, post the results of Lexi's upcoming labor and delivery and contact each of you by phone or email as soon as our pups arrive. Once again I find myself getting excited and hopeful that we'll have a fairly even mix of males and females. But as always, my first concern is for my girl, her health and well-being as well as that of the lives she carries. Litter updates will from here on out be posted under the "upcoming... soon to be 'current' litter" tab. See you there. Feel free to chime in!
