Dale and Cheryl wrapped up their holiday with family today- stopping by on their way home from Georgia to meet their newest family member. My little red collared boy has been given the name Zeke and should feel right at home in Brooksville where he'll continue to enjoy life in a county setting. With them came Zeke's belated Christmas gift... only slightly more belated than all the others. I gave him the opportunity to initiate it's eventual destruction before returning him to the pack and it was an instant hit with him. The best of both worlds, a ball and a rope all wrapped up in one! Again we had an enjoyable visit and enjoyed another pretty day. One of my favorite parts of breeding comes when I get the chance to meet the people who my pups will soon know as their family. In general, I feel like I basically know the people who come to visit but it's nice to finally be able to attach faces to conversations.

Fun Times!

Today took us on a slightly different and unexpected adventure. A couple days ago, while I was cleaning the indoor habitat I peaked in on the pups as I frequently do while they're eating on the deck. They had finished their meal and were romping around as usual. But it seemed the group was a few short of a full litter. I thought maybe some were in the dog house so I tapped on the window which generally prompts them to surface.  Next I walked into the bedroom to view the run from the window there. But no pups...  at least not within the run. I was a bit surprised by what I saw next... pups outside the kennel bouncing around with Galtero. He was dancing around them and it appeared everyone was having a grand old time. I'm not entirely sure they knew the difference between Galtero and mom though so I figured it was in everyones's best interest to retrieve the pups and identify exactly how they escaped in the first place. I walked out to find the biggest and the smallest... Drita and Rocky. I wasn't terribly surprised to find Drita but figured there'd have to be a pretty big gap in the situation to allow Rocky to slip through. I looked around and discovered an area between the deck and the fence with a freshly dug divot. I was aware they could get down there. The area's about 4 inches wide -the width of the 4x4's used as corner posts for the fence. I was not aware however, they'd be able to dig their way out. They must have dug while laying on their sides. I assessed the situation and figured I could remedy the breech by laying a board on its side that would prevent further digging. An easy fix for now. I put Drita and Rocky back in the pen and resumed my cleaning but wondering if they'd find a new avenue of escape I kept an eye on them. In no time flat I again saw pups bouncing around outside their confines. This time Zeus and Drita! I went out to retrieve them and did yet another parameter check. I added a couple blocks and that held them in while I finished the indoor space. This morning I discovered just how smart and determined the little buggers are though! Especially one!!!!  Same scenario. They were eating, I was cleaning and again I looked out to see Drita had managed to escape. And honestly, this time I have no idea how she managed to slither through but there she was bouncing around with mom. I went to check on the two of them and decided Skye would keep her safe for the short amount of time it would take to finish. Tomorrow I'll have to let them out and watch rather than tidy things up right away. But today, with habitat once again ready, I went out to retrieve my orange collared girl one more time. What I found was pretty endearing...  a mom and daughter moment. Naturally I had to grab my camera. That in itself   set the tone for the rest of the day. With their meal behind them, ready as a group for a snooze I brought everyone in for safekeeping and out individually for pics with mom. As it turned out, getting started on my weekly photos was simplified with Skye in attendance. She kept them occupied so I didn't have to run in order to get some distance between them and myself -or wait patiently while they found something of interest to explore. By the end of the day, I finished about half and got some cute mom and pup pics of each. These chilly mornings and short days are killing me though! Tomorrow the rest will receive the same opportunity. I discovered it was a win win! I get my pics and Skye gets to school her pups on an individual basis.  I think I can officially say they prefer me over her now. I don't think I'm quite as strict. Top that with being more generous with the grub and I've got their devotion hands down. They still love their momma though.

I checked the local forecast and we're supposed to have fair skies tomorrow with highs in the low sixties but unfortunately that will probably be the end of our outdoor escapades. It's not supposed to get out of the forties for the remainder of days leading up to our first cropping appointment. For them, it's too cold and for me a serious bummer!

Tomorrow we welcome Dale and his family and that will complete our selection process enabling all to start the New Year right with the knowledge of who's got who. Regardless of which pup you chose or acquired by default, I'm sure each and every one of you will be happy. I may be biased but once again I say... a really nice litter!
The look on their faces cracks me up! Those eyes!!!

Where Does The Time Go???

12/29/2017

Well, we're getting down to the wire with just one selection left to make! Dale and his family will be here New Years Eve leaving our friends of the north, Ava and her hubby,  knowing which pup will become "their" Zeus!

Pauline, her husband and son Cody, came for a visit yesterday to meet their pup Echo. I love that name. Enough so I nearly assigned it to one of my dogs a while back. We enjoyed a nice long visit and it seems Pauline and I share quite a bit in common. Between healthcare, pups and breeding we had multiple subjects to chat about. Cody enjoyed his time with Echo and Echo thoroughly enjoyed the visit and extra attention. It was a chilly day so after a quick trip outside to let her do her business we headed back in to let Echo romp around, be cuddled and in general get acquainted with the family she'll share her life with. Like Drita, Echo's actions basically mapped the course of the visit. These pups already have power! The visit, mainly about her, soon came to an end when she fell asleep in Cody's lap as did Suzy and Jeffs visit when Drita fell asleep at Jeff's feet.

Last night, was spent basically catching up on a few things. Most importantly Christmas! The presents some of you brought and the ones I got for the pups yet unnamed didn't actually happen as planned...  unfortunately, too much going on and too much to do to get them presented on the actual day. As planned and mentioned in an earlier post, either here or on the litter page, I dedicated the bulk of the day including a much over due photo shoot to my own pack. And these things it seems can't be rushed. Always hoping for that one great shot, I got somewhat wrapped up with two of my favorite things. My dogs and photography. In the end, I was left with what I thought were multiple great shots! Then in an effort to avoid leaving unfinished projects -along with a need to get my day's work posted in a timely fashion, I did just that. At least to Facebook. It seems, between my Facebook GMBD's page, the litter specific pages and this Website there are an abundance of places to post. I'm feeling a little disorganized and may have to simplify things a little going forward. Hard to keep track of what I've posted where. Soon each of you will have your pups by the paw and will essentially own the litter specific page. I will remain a member of course, "follow" the
group and will thoroughly enjoy your posts as they come across my feed. I hope there are many. From time to time, as the pups grow and mature, I'll steal some of my favorites to add to the puppy pages here. If any of you would rather I not share them, just let me know. The photos each of you send or post help those who come after you get a better understanding of what to expect when considering adding a GMBD's pup to their families. Photos of this litter specifically will be especially important. Both to those considering a pup and to me as a breeder since this is Skye's first. I need to see the finished product in order to evaluate and plan future breedings.  Skye is beautiful and Lynk handsome so I have no doubt their pups will be as well. But even so, I need confirmation of that belief. So please, participate in group and post away. And thanks again Simone for developing the page.

With that said, I reflect back to last night. Putting my nursing skills back to work I administered the first of the series of puppy vaccinations to each pup. I guess practice makes perfect. It seems the only thing they actually noticed was a requirement to sit still... at least for a brief moment. They all did well.

That business behind us, I thought the timing perfect to celebrate our belated Christmas, spend some one on one time with each pup and present them with their gifts. And of course there were photos! Those, in case you missed them, were posted to my GMBD's Facebook page. I must say, last nights photo shoot was truly a labor of love! Taking photos indoors of moving objects is definitely not without it's challenges! I'm not even going to tell you what time I wrapped things up. Let's just say both the pups and I had a late night.

I had hoped to get the pup pages updated with their weekly entry by now but it's really been too cold the past couple days to subject them to any extended periods outside. Today was an all day indoor day for them. Cold as well as drizzly. Tomorrow is a free day with no appointments or errands scheduled. The forecast calls for slightly warmer temps so I remain hopeful for a chance to gain some appropriate photos for the week. Last nights were really just for fun and to prove they really did get a chance to play with their toys! At least once...

Selections! We're Getting There!!!

Well, yesterday was a big day for selections! First up Suzy and Jeff came for a visit. They spent an hour or so playing with the Redheads before finally deciding the Orange Collared pup was destined to join their family. I think they loved them both and the choice was a tough one but I had a feeling all along they would choose Little Miss Orange. From birth on up she simply shared too many similarities with Linus, the pup that stole their heart during their visit a couple years back. At the end of the day, Orange settled at Jeff's feet much the same way Linus did on their first visit to GMBD's. Suzy has been saying for a while now she felt Linus would benefit from the addition of a 4 legged companion as he is quick to form bonds with and enjoy another dogs company. Congrats Linus! You are soon to have a little Dober-girlfriend to share your life with!!! Suzy and Jeff have named their girl Drita!
Next, although fairly delayed, we enjoyed a visit from Leslie and her hubby who ran into a pretty good snarl of traffic while headed north from Sarasota. As it turned out our scheduled 2pm visit ran well into darkness. It's always enjoyable and at times humorous watching people try and select just one pup from a group who are so similar. Their struggle was real. In the end with darkness closing in, they selected the darkest -both in collar and coat color of the pack. They chose Black Collared Boy and have named him Tristan! Hope they enjoyed, with their tough decision behind them, smooth sailing on their drive back home.
Knowing Pauline and Cody were likely sitting at home waiting to hear how the days selection process went I made the call to let them know which pup they could call their own. Purple Girl will be given the name Echo. Their plan is to come for a meet and greet tomorrow! I look forward to meeting them and I have no doubt they're anxious to meet Echo!

I guess somehow they knew it was Christmas and figured it was time...  Problem is, only empty boxes within boxes and not for them. Culprits: Majestic and Remedy! Almost had to laugh at the timing if nothing else.

A Full Day Dedicated To Play!
A little laundry, food for them and for myself but other than that, just play. No worrying about getting specific pups photographed. No appointments or errands. Just went with the flow. Started the morning off with our basic fair weather routine... breakfast on the deck followed by a rest while I tidied the indoor habitat. They looked so cute out there on their bed. I attempted a photo while sleeping but as soon as I opened the door they quickly awakened and within seconds were rearing to go. Black was in the attached dog house alone and Pink at the far end of the run alone. Guess the two don't like to be disturbed during slumber.
After breakfast and a snooze, I put the big dogs in their runs... and it was all about the pups. All rested up, their stamina was surprising. They're getting stronger and with increased zest for life with each passing day. Their interest in toys is also increasing and it seems the most favored is a simple rope toy. All in all it was a fabulous day... They've grown to my favorite age and as always have grown on me.  I'm going to miss the little buggers but on the other hand I get great enjoyment out of watching them continue to grow and thrive in their new environments with people that adore them. There will be challenges and times you'll be upset with them but before being too harsh on them, ask yourself how you can do better by them. Dobermans really do aim to please but they themselves have needs. If those needs are satisfied, they're a pretty easy keep. Questions or concerns are always welcome and I'll always be here for support. Better to ask early on if you're having an issue rather than wait until the issue becomes a monster. My request to each of you -that you reminder I care and appreciate updates. Goofy photos, gorgeous photos... frequent photos and updates. As it turns out the FB litter pages are wonderful avenues for that purpose.  They're also another avenue of support and encouragement. As I said, there will be challenges but it's kind of nice to know there are others facing the same one.

And now it's Christmas...  so I better get to bed. Our milk and cookies are set and the mice at bay... Want to make sure not a creature is stirring when that Jolly old man in the fancy flying sleigh with all those glorious reindeer head our way!

Merry Christmas! More To Come........

Scrambles!

So... here it is, once again 2am and I'm just now wrapping things up. Pretty typical though. Explains why I'm not generally a particularly early riser. I anticipate I'll be sleeping in tomorrow as long as the dogs allow. Hoping for at least 7:30. Maybe an afternoon nap. I'm kind of a siesta kind of girl when I can get away with it...

I managed to get all the pup pages finished and created some slide shows with the extras. It's pretty evident some pups got more time in front of the camera than others. On top of a variety of distractions, some were more cooperative than others, the lighting better for some and I think a couple were just plain worn out when their turn came. Blue looks tired in his photos. Or maybe it was me that was wearing down. I generally take a few notes when I'm out with the camera but skipped that this week. A couple of the pups, most specifically Scrambles, paid the price for that shortcut. Once I sat down to the computer to get to work, I discovered I barely had enough shots of her to give her page a full update. Not enough extra's for a slide show. Sorry Simone and Max. But you'll get to see the real deal tomorrow. Maybe we can get some shots during your visit to remedy the problem.

With that I'm calling it a night in prep for a new day!
